What is the best gay movie?

This one didn't make the cut for me.
In and Out on the other hand, now that was funny!

That was probably the worst "gay" movie I've ever seen. ALL of the jokes were made at the expense of gay people. All of the "real" gay people in the movie were stereotypes, and poor stereotypes, at that. Vin Reines couldn't just be a big gay firefighter, he had to be a big MINCING queen of a firefighter. Once he came out of the closet - he had to turn into a fairy, tweedling his fingers at Chuck and Larry whenever he saw them. True, all of the straight people in the movie were stereotypes, too. No one was a NORMAL person in that movie, and that could have worked, except it just wasn't funny. It was hateful. It was sophomoric (oh wait - a Sandler movie? And I was expecting it to have DEPTH???)

Save your money - and your time. Devote it to sorting your navel lint, instead, at the end you'll have been better entertained.

David Traversa. If you didn't see ANY of the turkish director Ferzan Ozpetek movies, please, please!! try to find: Hamam (The Turkish Bath)-1997
Le Fate Ignoranti (Sorry, I only know it by its italian title)-2001
La finestra di fronte (again, its italian title)-2003. If you don't see these
films you'll be missing a magnificent director's works (works of art!). I was
simply mesmerized by his work, the humanity in his characters, the treatement, and most of all, the script!! Unbelievable. What a director!! to me (he works in Italy) he is now the italian Almodovar.
You can also see from Spain: Segunda piel (Second Skin)-1999 by director Gerardo Vera, with Javier Bardem, Jordi Mollà and Ariadna Gil. Marvellous movie!! And of course, ALL Pedro Almodovar movies. There is a long gay cinematography out there, but as far as I remember the ones that I mentioned are true masterpieces, gay or whatever (the gayness in these movies doesn't diminish the true work of art contained in them).

David Traversa. To compensate for your lost time watching a bad movie, I'd like to recommend these ones to you, all of them SUPERB!!:
Le placard (The Closet)- French commedy -2001, By director Francis Veber and actors Daniel Auteuil and Gerard Depardieu.
A couple of old movies, but never equaled by ANYBODY: La cage aux folles (The Queen's Birdcage --my own translation, I don't remember the english title)-French-Italian -1978. This movie is SO FUNNY you'll have to watch it more than once to enjoy all the goings on. I saw it again a few night ago and couldn't believe how OUTRAGEOUS it was at the time. It's outrageous nowadays, so, you can imagine then!! one of the big hits of all times.
And of course, being so successful, they made 'La cage aux folles II' (1980). Believe it or not, as funny and excellent as the first one.
I hope you'll enjoy these movies.

I haven´t seen that many gay films but the ebst one evr imo is Somemrsturm (Summerstorm), a German flick from 2004. No stereotypes, great writing, very touching yet also a feel-good movie... Check it out!

I haven't seen many but "But I'm a cheerleader" was good I thought (girl gays) and "Kissing Jessica Stein" (also lesbians) "Will and Grace" is sometimes good and other times totally misses the humour mark.

It purely depends upon whether you are wanting to watch a comedy gay film or in fact a more serious drama-For gay dramas well I personally think that you cannot get better than "Brokeback Mountain" (which IMO is even more poignant now because of the untimely death of its star Heath Ledger) or perhaps you might like to try "And The Band Played On" or "Longtime Companion" maybe.
For a more comical story try the 1970 film "Boys in the Band" or my personal favourite "Love! Valour! Compassion!"-Both of these two bitter-sweet films show excellent quality of acting whereby the players' totally believable characters brilliantly interact with each other & "bounce" off each other just perfectly that you begin to feel like some voyeur spying on some private gathering!

Superman Returns

Thats not a joke by the way..the film is ripe with gay undertones, replace clark kent having superpwers with him being homosexual and the basic premise of the film is the same

"Superman Returns

Nope.

reply

Oh, definitely; it kept staring me in the face. But you have to be at least a little clued-in to pick up on it.

"There's No Business Like Show Business" (1954) [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047574] also comes to mind with respect to Johnnie Ray's angst on how to tell his parents he wants out of the family show business act to become a priest.

I don't know... "The Bird Cage" with Robin Williams?

reply

Recently saw To Wong Fu Thanks For Everything and enjoyed that.

Chuck and Larry was quite possibly the worst film I've ever seen... offensive and cringeworthy.

Here are some better ones:

*beep* Amal (lesbians)
Transamerica (transsexual)
XXY (more gender issues..)
Boys Don't Cry (transsexual)

(sorry, they're all a bit on the dark side.. I've yet to see a comedy about gays that doesn't reach deep into the stereotype bag.)

reply

PS. That beep is the f-word and it really is the film title. (Norwegian film I think)

I h dont really know any gay movies. Nope! But i like this one because its funny. I still want to watch Brokeback Mountain? Is that good? Hope so it has Jake Gyllenhaal in so it has got to be. He was great in Donnie Darko!! :)

reply

Brokeback is alright. A little drawn out and depressing, but some people go for the tragic stuff.

I really liked Bird Cage myself.
