How was Tim's father a Jerk?

Everbody has such disparaging remarks to say about him. He struck me as a man loved his son and was trying to set up a bond between the two of them. Heck, he paid for the two of them to travel all the way to Hawaii. Started off by trying to have a father son dating experience, and tried earnestly to win the affection of his son. Tim seemed to me to be a cold, unforgiving, and stubborn child. I found it bizarre that it is so easy for people to sympathize with someone writing off their own father. At the end of the day that was his pop, and his father should be in no way obligated to alter his entire personality because his son has an attitude problem. If he is obnoxious, or strange in his ways, he is the father, and Tim is son. Older people don't redefine themselves on the whims of children.

But that is not to say this movie didn't suck. Cause it did. (thought i'd throw that in there)

I agree - Tim was the jerk.

And I agree that the movie sucked too!

like GaryLee828 said.

But it goes even further than this. His father makes fun of him at the dinner scene. That's just pure vile. Also, the father don't get what does wrong. When Tim asks his father 'What there is to talk about', his father has no clue whatsoever. He can't see that he was a jackass towards his son, when he tried to hit on his son's date! No selfesteeming father hits on his son's date!

The thing is, Les and Tim had opposite personalities and they were complete strangers to each other, that's why their trip ended up being such a big mess.
To Les, there was nothing a fancy trip, a couple of drinks and some girls wouldn't cure, so he couldn't understand how the same didn't applied for his son.
He wasn't being vile to humilate Tim or anything, he was just clueless about his son because he wasn't around during his growing years, so he had no idea what kind of guy his son turned out to be.

I'm with you. I thought Tim acted like a spoiled insufferable brat. His dad was at least trying.
