Is Micky really talented or just can take tremendous amount of punishmea

So I just watched the movie and I had to wonder. Is Micky really a talented boxer or can just take an enormous loads of pain? It seemed liked he would take hit after hit after so many more hits than finally start throwing some back... Only to be back on the ropes or corner taking another load of hits. His trainers never taught him it was a good idea to take those hits. Remember Dicky was yelling at him for Micky to get off the ropes while Micky let the London boxer whale at him.

A "Punchy Boxer"... AKA a GOOD Boxer. He was a slugger. That's how some guys are. Arturo and Micky put together some really good fights. He made millions. He wasn't a bum, unless all you like are dancers. I enjoy all types of boxers for what they are. Micky could SLUG

Look for the Gatti/Ward trilogy are some of the best fights I thought I ever watched. A lot of boxing and heart....and honestly I remember watching at the time thinking either one of them could have won the decision.

If you want some entertainment, try to find them online. Despite what anyone thinks of Ward; those fights were maybe his very best.

It's sad the way they glossed over those fights as nothing major. They were a big deal at the time. Honestly, I'd rather watch those over again rather than many heavyweight fights.

reply

They didn't gloss over those fights, it just wasn't part of the story being told. It was the story of Mick and Dick lol and the transition between both of them. Dickys fall, Mickys rise. I understand what you're saying but that wasn't what they were trying to make a film of...

And I agree, those fights were great! I remember those (Being from MA, it was a big deal), im live in Brockton which is home of Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler, we appreciate our boxers. Those Ward/Gatti fights were amazing. I just feel like it wasn't the story they were telling, know what I mean?

You know your stuff. I was REALLY disappointed the movie didn't at least touch on the first fight.

Those were wars in the ring.

They were going to include the Ward v Gatti F1, but Arthru died and they decided to end the movie as they did.

reply

The director said that during the script writing it was the third fight between them and if ward won they would feature the gatti fights if he lost they'd focus on what they did in the end

reply

I don't know, but he winked at me once. It was an interesting moment. A lot of Bostonians seem to love him.

It was dramatized for the film but its pretty much exactly like its portrayed in the basic sense. He wasn't much, then went on a great run. Learned to box and became more than just a right hook. He mantained status as a slugger, which he was... But he had some great fights with Arturo Gatti, he made millions during that time. He was a great combo boxer. If he opened up a guy, he took advantage. His body shots were ridiculous

reply

He was a good brawler, not a very good boxer but had an iron chin. He was a decent body puncher, the left to the body being his money shot.
You can't be a world champion without being talented.

Mickey was an extremely talented fighter. I was at the first fight with Arturo Gotti 15 years ago I said then it was the best fight I ever watched, and it still is.

Marcus Davis 17-1 boxer and ex UFC fighter told me that micky hit him in the bodt in training once and from then on he kept his hands down to fully protect his body said he didnt care if he hit his face he didnt wana nother body shot again

reply

He wasn't a great boxer no.He was decent at taking punishment, allowing himself to be hit usually so he could land his own shots. Against the elite and tope level it never paid off, as they could get in and out,and hold when necessary. His timing and speed was lacking, but if he landed to the body, many opponents said he would take the wind out of your sails so you couldbarely stand by the last rounds. If you have time, watch the Vince Phillips and Zab Judah fights, they highlight his level the most.

He was an entertaining fighter, with a good chin, and nevr say die attitude. people have already alluded to gatti ward trilogy (Once again when Gatti boxes in the second fight instead of trading, ward is left dead at sea.)But the fight you really want to check out for entertainment is vs Emanuel Augustus. All 10 rounds have over 100 punches thrown by both fighters, with atleast 1in4 landing (which is pretty high) as much as I love Gatti Ward,it has nothing on that fight with Augustus
