Out of theaters

Has this been pulled out of theaters at this point? There were no box office results for this movie as of last Thursday, and out of 35 movies posted, Justice League appeared no where on the list.

Has Justice League ended its run after a mere 56 days? I know its salad days were well behind it, but JL was still earning some money in theaters... for the weekend of January 5 - 7 it pulled in another half a million domestic and, when you're trying to recoup as much as possible, I would think the possibility of another $300,000 to half a million this weekend would have been enticing enough. Heck, T:R pulled in another $450,000 over the long weekend, and it's now on day 74.

So why has this been pulled so early? Apparently there have been listings on iTunes indicating the movie will be available in digital HD on January 30th. I'm guessing that the movie was pulled from theaters in order to be prepared for the home release.

JL bombed [for what it is it had mediocre results. A billion was easily expected. Didn't get even close to that]. No way would JL do another 300. Bad word of mouth, excruciating reviews and was overall a bad movie with the worst CGI on a CBM in years [wonderwoman's CGI on the 3rd part was also horrible; it's pretty much a trend on DCEU movies]. At this point people couldn't care less for the DCEU. If anything, JL teached people not to spend their money on DCEU movies.

TR, on the other, had tremendous legs for what it is [a Thor movie. I will say it again, this time slowly....a Thor.... movie.... Thor.... as in... 2 meh movies before.... this one turned into a satire of itself]. Excellent word of mouth and great reviews. It's a cool movie to watch too. Nothing to tell your grandchildren about, but worth the money. At this point, the MCU could release a movie about a turd slowly floating away into the ocean and it would still make good money. There's a general consensus of "faith" in the Marvel movie department that pays off with good to great movies [and tickets sale].

I disagree that it couldn't have done another $300,000 over the long weekend. For the past three to four weeks, the numbers for JL and T:R were tracking very close to one another, with JL usually maintaining a very moderate lead. I agree, that's not saying much when JL was a full two weeks newer than T:R, but that has been the pattern. Last weekend, JL did about $560,000 domestic and T:R $520,000 domestic.

This weekend (not counting the Monday holiday), T:R pulled in another $385,000. If the pattern had held from the previous few weeks, with JL tracking near T:R's numbers, I would have expected a low end of about $300,000.

Again... I agree with you that JL was an unmitigated disaster given the production and marketing costs, which is why, if I were WB, I would milk every dime out of the theaters that I could.

the problem is that no one is going to see it even if it remains at theaters. Now the fans [or better yet the Snyder fans] are demanding a Cut that doesn't seem to exist while, at the same time, acknowledging yet another problem from WB: the release of an unfinished product.

It's a shame, really. When you think about it, we're talking about THE super hero assembly by excellence. Greed spoke higher, and the result of it is what we now know. The MCU has a firm grip on their pie.

Justice League has not been pulled from theaters but it may have just transitioned over to the discount theaters in your area. More often than not there is a bump up in box office when that happens as it can have a larger distribution from the dwindling 'First Run' screens.

If you search with something like a Moviefone.com you'll see that JL is indeed still playing. My guess is that it takes a little time for the accounting to catch up with the change in theaters.

But, But, But this is also indicative of the falling per screen take from First Run screens and theater owners struggling with 2 people per show when they could be showing something more profitable per screen. JL has had a rather steep per screen average drop versus let's say Thor Ragnarok. For 01/11/2018 JL was in 500+ First Run theaters with a per screen avg of $67/Screen. Thor Ragnarok was +325 screens with an average of $119/Screen.

It is a business decision at this point for theater chains and WB. Why waste screens and seats to take in so few dollars even though it is still making money?

Good call, NorrinRad!

I'm sure you're right... JL has probably made the migration between the full-price "First Run" screens and is now mostly limited to those cheap, second run theaters; the dollar bins of the movie world. Most of those second run theaters are not huge chains, and I'm sure they don't report in the same way your huge theater conglomerates do.

It was obvious from week 2 how poorly this film was performing at the box office, but even the most conservative numbers were projecting in the $675-million range. For this to stall this early, to the point where in will not even reach the $660-million dollar mark, is not just a failure, but an epic failure.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnndddd they're back.

JL has BO numbers posted for those missing days and it's daily totals have indeed fallen behind Thor Ragnarok.

reply

Not just behind, at this point... WAY behind at this given stage. For the past few weeks, T:R was nipping at the heels of JL, off by a few tens of thousands for weekends, and see-sawing back and forth on week days. The bottom truly fell out for JL this weekend, however, dropping under $300,000, while T:R continued to show just how strong its legs are, even with a two week head start.

It's making half a million domestic a week. It will reach a billion in 2025! Can't wait for the sequel.

Clearly ashamed that this movie fell behind Thor: Ragnarok on daily box office take, WB is no longer reporting the numbers on time. However, they cannot hide the true for much time.

Yes, Thor 3 in its 11th weekend is doing more money than JL in its 9th. Wow!

reply

Daily box office for T:R and JL? Wednesday 01/17/2018 T:R $31,458 or $130/Screen and JL $18,156 or $80/Screen.

Sing along with me ala Bob Seeger, "JL is falling Like a Rock"!!
