Sympathetic to the Germans?

Now, I'm no historian but I thought they were the bad guys of WWI.

reply

Yes, you're right.

reply

So you're saying we should hate the German cannon fodder, the innocent boys who didn't know what it was all about?
It may help if you know that the book was written by a German frontline soldier.

reply

Don't mind the OP.
Did read more ingenious posts of him. ☻

reply

We should hate Americans, first of all.

reply

You sound like a special person.

reply

Why hate Americans?

reply

American interventionism, for starters.

reply

The US was neutral at the beginning of WWI and they did not declare war until Germany began sinking merchant and passenger ships in the Atlantic. Germany had also tried to bring Mexico onto their side.

reply

I'm talking about post-WW2 USA.

reply

I’m sorry. I thought we were talking about a WWI film.

reply

Someone asked a general question so I answered in a general way.

reply

Always helpful.

reply

Am I to assume you are from Argentina?

reply

So you hate Americans but your country basically openly welcomed the Nazis who fled Germany after WWII....cool.

reply

One thing is emigrating to a country, another is receiving a diplomatic welcome.

reply

Lol semantics.....stop being ridiculous. Anyways, no one likes the top dog so you just keep on hating us and guess what, we don't care. And try not to get too triggered over that, ok?

Comedy?

reply

Where?

reply

The book and film are from the viewpoint of a low ranking soldier. It was mainly the leaders and the actual war criminals who were held responsible after the war by the victors.

You did not read the book or watch the films they were based on did you?

reply

"just following orders"

reply

Which of the characters in the film committed war crimes while "just following orders"?

Has any soldier ever been brought before a war tribunal for simply engaging in combat against other soldiers? It is rare, but Erich Hartmann, for example, was sentenced to ten years in prison by the Soviets for fighting on the eastern front in WWII. The conviction was later overturned.

reply

The Argie is obviously kind of unclear about the timeline of the two world wars.

reply

The losers are usually portrayed as the bad guys.

reply

And this posted by someone with the nick “TheArgentinian”. Oh sweet irony!!!

The Germans were not entirely at fault for that horrible, destructive war. The big powers of Europe had been engaged in an escalation of tensions for decades leading up to it. Rampant militarism, foolish ‘secret’ alliances, imperialism run amok and seething nationalism all played a major role in causing that terrible disaster.

The saddest part is that the ‘average’ people like most of us had to die screaming in the mud while our so-called leaders were put up in fine rooms to move chess pieces around the board like it was all a game.

This was a very fine movie in my opinion, it really showed the awfulness of what happened.

reply

I agree with your assessment. Watched it last evening. It had some very subtle scenes of how those wishing to engage in war were so far removed from it. From the general being able to eat lavish meals next to a huge fireplace and throw scraps at his dog to the French representative on the train complaining about day old pastries while both sides had young men caked in mud and filth living with rats in the trenches.

The film made it very clear with a scene near the end that the men really had no choice but to follow orders or be shot.

At the end, when the the French and German soldiers are just walking about in the same trench was a powerful scene. Everyone wanted to go home.

reply

Exactly, it's difficult to say who in specific were the "bad guys" in the first war.
Germany was written off as the ultimate bad guys in WW1 because they lost it...

But everyone was at fault.
This war escalated due to several reasons and from several different countries.

Unlike WW2, where Germany was clearly the bad guys that started all of this.
Although, of course, many will say that WW2 started from WW1.
