Has made more money in three days than Lightyear has in three weeks!!!!

A number of reasons. One of them is that it just comes off as a fun movie without asking anyone to take a stand in a fucking culture war.

Notice they didn't snub Steve Carell and INSTEAD hire Jack Black to voice Gru, THEN introduce an "openly pansexual" Minion in a movie that's set in 1976, THEN proceed to make "Minions" In Name Only as a tired cliche action movie...

Hence what I've been saying for years now...Universal is the new king of animation. People pleasing and much more cost efficient. Disney has fallen off a cliff and it's been a long time coming.

I don't understand why Disney and Pixar movies cost $150+ million while Sony and Illumination typically cost $80 million. I'm aware that Disney/Pixar are pioneers, so they include R&D in a film's budget (ie research for improving cloth/hair simulation, water/fire effect, skin textures, lighting, motion blur etc); For example the budget for Tangled (2005) is listed as an insane $260 million, BUT that includes years of research and development of software for the film's animation style and Rapunzel's hair. But still, rival studios are able to make their films for less than half of Disney/Pixar's budget. Maybe someone who understands computer animation can explain?
