Fun Movie
It's nothing special, but it's worth seeing. It's fun, and reminds me of how superhero movies were before the MCU came along. It feels very much like something from 2004, not 2024, but in a good way.

shareI mean, when you watch 2004 CGI of course it'll feel like that, lol. I'll watch it once it hits Disney+ but even that may be a slog. You must be one of the few that actually enjoyed it when ratings among the masses have it below:
3.8/10 · IMDb
14% Rotten Tomatoes
30% · Metacritic
It's never clear how reliable, or honest, any of those rating sites are. I'd advise a bit of skepticism before believing what you see there, but you're of course free to interpret that data as you wish.
The CGI was on par with anything else out today. I'm not making it to be anything spectacular, but it has a very late '90s/early 2000s feel to it in how the story is told, and the stakes of the film. From a story-telling, pacing, and even aesthetic standpoint it feels utterly unlike anything from the MCU or the DCEU, and more at home with a Raimi Spider-Man film, an older X-Men film, or even a film like Blade or Spawn.
I enjoyed watching it, as those I saw it with. We all 5 agreed it was fun and entertaining. It's not the sort of film I'd buy on Blu-ray, or ever watch again.
cinemascore is pretty much the most reliable source for gauging audience response.
it has a c+ which is very bad. doesn't take away from anyone's good time, but it definitely isn't a crowd-pleaser.

I agree that Cinemascore is the best of the bunch due to how it is conducted.
The Cinemascore rating makes a lot of sense, and jives with what I suggested. 38, 14, and 30 are all low in the F range. I'd give this film a B- or a C+ myself. It's pretty clear that, as always, the IMDB, RT, and Metacritic scores are useless.
fwiw, the way you described the movie is pretty much exactly how i felt about the venom films.
they're silly & not great & i never sit around thinking 'it would be great to watch venom right now' but i had a perfectly fun time watching both of them & if i'm ever in a room where they're playing i wouldn't yell 'turn that off!'
when madame web shows up on a streamer i use, i might watch it. we'll see!
"...reminds me of how superhero movies were before the MCU came along."
Wildly hit-or-miss?
Right? Mf said it like it's a compliment 😂
shareIt's neither good nor bad. I'm merely observing that this had the feel of a movie from that era.
shareOkay so just average then?
sharePretty average, but well-made and well-paced. Nothing great, nothing awful, just a couple hours of mindless superhero entertainment that never dragged, had laughs, and remained interesting to the end, which is more than I can say for most modern action or superhero films.
shareGuess what? I enjoyed it too. More real sets and less bluescreen than in other superhero movies of the last decade.
shareI'm getting the sense that most people who watched it enjoyed it. There was a lot of hate and derision directed at this movie before it came out-- understandable based on how bad most of the Sony superhero films have been-- but I suspect a lot, maybe most, of the negative reviews online are coming from people who haven't watched the film.
shareI suspect a lot, maybe most, of your brain cells are missing.
shareCase in point-- this person replied within minutes to my post, but with nothing to add to the conversation. Rather than discuss the film at hand, he chimed in to insult me for expressing an opinion contrary to his, suggesting he's among those hating on the film without having seen it.
shareI added an opinion on the state of your brain, and it's lack of cognitive ability.
