I don't understand: Why Isabela Merced said she can't go to police until 18?

Title.

Anyone knows?

Her father was deported, she is under age without a guardian, so she could be sent to a foster home.

What is wrong with foster home in america? I watched Instant Family, which also stars Isabela Merced. It's like heaven.

reply

It really depends on which TV show you watch. If you watch "The Wire" it is like hell.

I am guessing in this movie it leans more towards the hell variety.

reply

No. Dakota’s character said to that girl something like : "Not all fosters homes are hell". Meaning she herself had a normal childhood.

I’m always surprised to see how Hollywood portrays foster homes in USA like hell. Like all those women who take kids are evil monsters who torture kids. Is it really? It can't be like that.

I would actually like to her a story from people who grew up in them.

reply

"Not all fosters homes are hell"

That itself says plenty.

reply

Because they have to perpetuate the modern myth of illegal immigration = good and efforts to only allow legal immigration = evil

We're frankly lucky she didn't say she would be locked as a kid in a cage

reply

She was born in US, so she is not illegal, just underage.

reply

She says she doesn't want to be deported. Also doesn't make sense because she'd be an anchor baby. But logic is not important in this movie, and we're thinking about this harder than the writers did.

reply

If she did not have the papers she would have been deported alongside with her father. Also the first thing she said would have been:"I don't have the papers", the foster home would have been the least of her worries.

She says she doesn't want to be deported.

I think that is just dumb things what a 16 years old would say, it is not like she has a law degree.
