This had a 90 million budget

Clearly flopped at the box office. They won't trust the director with any big films again.

Whoever greenlit a 90 million dollar budget for this needs to be fired. It's a really good movie, but even in normal times there was no way this was going to make a profit with that budget.

It was originally supposed to be 65 million, but due to covid delays it soared to 90 million. Even 65 million was a risk but the lockdowns sharted on this film from a great height. The box office failure could be spotted from space itself, it was inevitable.

These films just aren't successful anymore. I reckon the studio executives thought with the hit tv show Vikings, that a Viking based film had a shot. They were wrong.

They should have cut out the cheesy CGI and kept it naturalistic.

So many directors start out in horror and try to branch out into bigger and better things. Eggers doesn't have a mainstream/casual friendly style. He either needs to be a director-for-hire and try shoot a mainstream/casual film or stay in his lane by making low budget artisan films that critics adore but don't make much profit. That's just the way it is. If he ever gets another big budget film he'll need a hit or he'll be blacklisted as box office poison.

I agree about Eggers. The VVitch was decent, not especially memorable. Felt the same about The Northman.

Will be interesting to see if Ari Aster (another horror critical favorite) gets a big budget like this for a future film.

Most of it was probably snorted away up the nostrils of all the big name Hollywood 'A' listers attached to this project.

Perhaps going with less well known names would have given the film not only a more authentic / immersive feel but would have helped it on the budget Vs profit front as well...

I ended up not going b/c of all the cleaning chemicals they're spraying on the seats now. Also, I don't want the vaccinated "shedding" spike proteins on me either.

reply

And that's a shame.
