I don't remember that bit from either the movie or the book. Though admittedly I read the book a long time ago.

to dupes of the bene gesserit, who use religion as a mechanism of control.
That's sorta correct. The Bene Gesserit spread those false prophesies... But the prophesies also come true in a way the Bene Gesserit did not intend and the messiah they intended to create is not under their control, so the Fremen were correct... On the other hand, Paul ultimately turns out to be more than the Freman wanted too.
