Why is Alphie referred to as a girl?

apart from the fact that it's a robot and has no actual gender, why does everyone in the movie refer to a child with short hair as a female? wouldn't you assume it's supposed to be a boy?

i had the same issue with milli bobby brown's character in the first season of "stranger things".

Maybe then others would complain here why a girl is marked as a boy or just a child. As you do, you can only make it wrong nowadays :D
The actress is clearly a girl, so I never thought about it.

I thought it was a boy at first, and kind of worked out it was a girl before the pronouns were used, because of the girly voice. You have a point though. To paraphrase Malcolm in Jurassic Park, how do they know she's a female? What, does somebody go out and pull up her skirt?

Seriously. I thought I misheard first time when they called it "She". For me it looked like a little boy.

Went to check and robot was actually played by little girl

Because this is just another "the key to everything is this girl" type of story.

Visuals were fine, but the rest was boring.
