Just watched this..

.. and it was terrible. The predator was CG the entire movie (as well as the mountain lion and bear) and the redesign was laughable, he has a CG 8 pack and looked like a skinny shredded Uruk hai from LOTR. The wokeness was in abundance of course (a tiny woman breaking gender norms and kills 3 or 4 guys in a brawl, white of course), as well as the blatant anti-white messaging. The climax was a joke, but I won't spoil it here. At least the scenery was nice I guess.

reply

Sounds god-awful. How can anyone like this crap?

reply

I'll stick to 1 and 2 and never watch this again.

reply

smart choice.

reply

But this one is socially important for this time, because it's the first action film with a female lead! /S

It has broken boundaries, and you must HATE women for being non plussed about it! /S /S

reply

too bad kevin peter hall isn’t still around

There's Carey Jones who played the Black Krrsantan in "The Book of Boba Fett" and Ian Wyte who played Wun-Wun on "Game of Thrones".

reply

It was better than I expected. The scenery was more plentiful and interesting than I expected, the kills were satisfying and the Predator type seemed mature-sound or something. Looked like Master Ecage. The climax seemed to be based on my movie - Island Of The Green Lagoon - and I found it good enough to complete the fantastic movie. 8 out of 10.... instead of 9, mainly cause of the threat of a real predator itself in the fabric of my reality.

reply

How do you mentally get around a 90 pounds teenage girl beating a master killer race of aliens?

reply

Didn't think about it. Anything's possible. Maybe it's based on my movie where teenagers are being killed by a monster man. In that Kimberley winds up killing him - Carl. It makes sense as a movie thing to me. Unreal entertainment.

reply

i'm pretty open for suspension of belief for films, but prefer they KIND OF represent some close reality. IE I'm not a fan of super heros now, because after the original Iron Man, it's all punching people through walls, and earth killing sky beams. senseless over the top ability. where the original Iron man was a human, vulnerable, and would get hurt.

This film seems like a cartoony stretch to me. Like SHE has some random super power to beat these much much MUCH more qualified, practiced, and technology driven aliens.

reply

She's kind of like a smart fearless warrior who is capable of getting the job done. Reminds me of my sister. And she's not a modern girl who would need to beat a monster through luck as it happens in my movie. And the predators thelselves could've made this movie and you'd have to respect their wisdom. Keep thinking the predator might be God....

...

...alrighty then...

reply

OH, she actually went head to head with the Pred?

I had the plot down as:

Girl is told not to hunt by tribe, because women are oppressed. She defeats the mystical bear, which no man in the tribe has ever come close to defeating. Pred see's this, is impressed. While she's out hunting at the patriarchies behest, the tribe is murdered by the white man. Pred also see's this and joins forces with her to kill the evil white man, who is led by the white evil hunt leader called Bonald Bumf.

Is this review satire? I can't tell.

Just watched it and I thought it was fantastic, great action, suspenseful, brutal kills, cinematography and music were very good and the protagonist actually had a character arc. The Predator was badass but so were the Comanche warriors.

Lol at the people talking about 'realism' in their predator films. It's not just the main character Naru who is a highly skilled warrior it's all of them and they all hold their own against the Predator for a bit. Naru ends up fleeing a lot of the time and even starts to doubt the predator can be killed. But all the Comanche warriors in the film are dodging and evading the predator's attacks for a while, they're not just slaughtered straight away. The Predator actually takes one hell of a beating a lot of the time and keeps going.

I suppose the same people complaining about 'realism' weren't complaining when mid 40's Danny Glover defeated a Predator in Predator 2 LOL, nobody cares, it's a great sci-fi action film and the best since the first in my opinion and actually brought something new and fresh to the franchise instead of just rehashing the best bits of the first film.

reply

I'm fairly certain that even in his 40s Danny Glover still had considerably more upper body strength than a teenage girl.

Regardless, the problem is not "realism," it's suspension of disbelief; and that's far easier to apply to a career cop in a dystopian, crime-ridden city than to some skinny little girl whose highest priority in life are her own personal desires, despite having grown up in a tribal society in an extremely hostile environment.

reply

let's check the math...

a large, muscular, strong, modern military trained guy with lots of deadly weapons VS a predator

or

a tiny, waifish, primitive girl with spears VS a predator.

yep. adds up perfectly fine.

Next up: Predator VS an amoeba
I'm sure it will have its audience too

reply

The "or" doesn't make sense because it's not like Arnold failed to beat the Predator. In fact, Danny Glover, Adrien Brody, and Boyd Holbrook also all succeeded

reply

I think you need to rewatch the first Predator. Arnold camouflages himself in mud so the predator can't track his body heat. He crafts makeshift weapons and traps. Eventually the predator sees Arnold as a worthy opponent to the point where Predator removes it's mask and weapon to fight Arnold hand-to-hand but Arnold is still overpowered. No 'deadly weapons' are used, you make it sound like he defeats the Predator with an RPG or something.

Nothing like that happens in Prey. Naru doesn't have the muscles but she can still hunt, set traps, use a bow and arrow, a blade and she invents a tomohawk on a rope as a quick way of recalling her weapon. She's quick and agile and doesn't even engage the predator in hand-to-hand combat. The predator in fact doesn't even see her as a threat as he totally ignores her as it's on the hunt for worthy prey. Not exactly subtle gender commentary, but it helps give Naru a slight advantage when the Predator underestimates her.

She also gets a lot of help from her war chief brother in the third act and the way she defeats the predator is more from outsmarting it rather than going toe to toe with it. But you'd know this if you'd actually watched the film instead of just trolling and assuming it's going to be a gender swapped remake of the first film.

reply

well, i bet you get what I am saying why the premise is not attracting people.

I'll catch it eventually when it is streaming free and decide if I like it, but it already lacks appeal to me, just like the new feminist version of Charlies Angles.

reply

Yeah I get it and I haven't seen the new Charlie's Angels film either due to it sounding like feminist garbage. I hate the Star Wars sequels with Ray who can do everything easily and is just the best Jedi ever. Also the all female Ghostbusters film from 2016 which has every male character being an idiot.

For me Prey is more in line with well written female characters that you'd get from James Cameron or Joss Whedon and the supporting cast at least has a few likeable male characters as well.

reply

All respect for your interests and tastes. Everyone is allowed to like what they like. :)
Movies have never been "one size fits all"

reply

Same to you, different strokes for different folks and all that.

reply

Agreed. Its very low stakes and forgettable. The almost entirely cgi predator really kinda ruins it. Animal lovers are gonna hate it. There are a couple of ok scenes but its all cgi action. I liked the dog and some of the wilderness shots and the use of that medicine. It just didnt feel like a very serious effort.

reply

I agree with many of your comments... the action was extremely boring-generic.

I'd rate it a 3/10.
