Lets face it, if George Clooney or Tom Hanks wouldve had the lead...

People would be crazy over this movie. The only reason why it wasnt a hit is because it had Mel Gibson. So sad that ppl care that much about a great actor/director's personal life.

Let's be honest. Mel Gibson was in top of his game. Ray Winstone was cool, but the whole movie fell flat. I only watched it because of Mel Gibson. If it would have been George Cloony I wouldn't been even half the interested.

Of course you watched it because Gibson was in it, you are a fan of his.
that's entertainment business at some point.

other people would of watched it because of the British tv show, so having a famous British actor in the part RAY WINSTON helps with Local distribution in the UK, plus the original series director who made the tv show made this movie.

the movie fell flat?

I don't think I agree with this statement.

the film was good. was entertaining, but it didn't manage to capture a big audience when it opened. plenty of films don't! doesn't mean it was a bad movie.
just means there was a lot going on that week it was released, the theme might have been a little dark, or what ever.
same goes for Gringo. the movie industry has been in a real transition in this past 10 years.

still edge of Darkness made money!

Yes, I'm a fan of Mel and maybe I was little harsh earlier when I said the film fell flat. It was an average and generic conspiracy thriller that was entertaining enough to keep the viewer interested to the end. One of those were you enjoy the work of the cast more than the film itself. The film worked mostly because of the cast.

I couldn't care less about his personal life, but it bothered me that he seemed incapable of acting any emotion other than anger in this film. Even when he was supposed to be grieving over his daughter he just looked blank with that occasional sideways eye flick thing that he does.

Hanks and Clooney would not have been good choices. Liam Neeson, maybe...

To be honest, I don't think anyone could have done as good a job as Bob Peck did in the original BBC series. His portrayal of a bewildered, grieving father barely holding it all together at the same time as he's trying to find out what happened to his daughter was mesmerising. And he didn't have the cosy, walking off into the light with Emma ending that Gibson had - Peck's final scream of rage and loss, as he finally realises that she's gone for ever and that he will never talk to her again, not even in his head, is one of the most powerful, harrowing endings I've ever seen.

People are actually talking about this movie. Nobody could care less about some unknown.

Jesus. You need to see more Mel Gibson movies if you really think that all he ever conveys is anger. When the man cries - as he does many times in his career, he can make the whole audience cry. And if you want more range, watch his Hamlet produced in 1990. He got totally screwed out of an acting nomination because he was typecast like you just did.

Mel Gibson made a stupid mistake when arrested for DUI and he has been appropriately taken to the woodshed over it. It has taken him a long time to get back on his feet and he will always have to watch his p's and q's in his conduct. However, if one is politically correct in Hollywood they can usually get away with anything. Mel Gibson is certainly not politically correct and a lot of the powers that be do not like his political and religious declarations and so his is treated like a lot of conservatives in Hollywood. So much for liberal tolerance. I am still in his corner and wish him well.
