this will be the series that will finally 'next generation' Star Trek again

think this will be the series of the 'nuTrek' (2017 onwards) that will finally REALLY please everyone die hard trekkies/casual and none fans alike (after Discovery disappointed everyones expectations of a TOS prequel), and put Trek back into the mainstream tv in a way not seen since TNG s3-7/1990-94

Plus the added bonus of the forthcoming nostalgia fest of TNG s8 (Picard s3 - i.e. what everyone was expecting from s1/2) and the next Kelvin movie (which will be no doubt influenced by the success of Marvel/DC multiverse possibly incorperating various past Trek characters/eras) - both due 2023 - we could be looking at Trek REALLY hitting the mainstream in a big way again like the previous 'mainstream Trek' eras of the 70s (TOS reruns/TMP), early/mid 80s (Treks II/III/IV), early/mid 90s (TNG/VI/GEN/FC), 2009/13 (JJ Treks)

I have zero hope because it's produced by Kurtzman & co.

(do they really have a Noonien-Singh on board??)

As long as Alex Kurtzman is involved, I'm not considering this anything less than more shitty, expensive, woke fanfics of his. You just wait. It'll be as bad as Shitscovery and Pee-hard.

Best Star Trek in 25 years. Best pilot ever. Surprised there are few user reviews, it premiered 3 hours ago.

That's a very low bar though. I am conflicted. I really like the more episodic format, the general classic vibe, and Pike. I was pleased that Spock's voice and demeanor overcame how goofy the actor looks. I still have issues with some things like having Spock hanging out with the girl he supposedly hadn't seen since he was a kid, and having him ready to just hook up with her. That all felt extremely contrary to what we know of Vulcans in general and Spock specifically. Plus, knowing the clowns running the show, I can't help but feel we're going to get tricked at some point. I'd feel WAY better if a different group of people were in charge of this show. They have fooled us before, repeatedly.

I don't agree with the title, because I don't think it will reach that TNG quality.

But having seen the first episode, it gives trekkies hope for a better quality Star Trek Universe than we've been getting lately.

It's not perfect, and it has its rough edges. I saw a situation that could have been solved with diplomacy, but where they quickly resorted to violence. And dialogue of one or another character that is very 21st century-like. These two are, fortunately, somewhat uncommon problems, since the episode also shows that these imperfections can be overcome.

If it continues like this, if the first episode is an indicator of what's to come, and assuming it doesn't descend into the major problems of shows like "Discovery" or "Picard", it easily, and by far, manages to be the best that Star Trek has offered in recent years.

It really has to stay on this course and not stray from here. Fingers crossed.

Yeah it's alright. It's the best of the new live action series for sure based solely on the pilot, but it still wasn't amazing. There are some minor nitpicks here and there as another comment mentioned re: mannerisms and such but nothing too glaring (except for the last scene has some hot garbage from the bridge crew). One thing I have always said tho is that the current people in charge still fundamentally misunderstand the philosophy of Star Trek and the internal logic it operates by but that isn't even my main criticism of the nuTrek shows (that problem still persists in SNW but seems to be limited to secondary characters and not necessarily the overall show as it was in STD). My main criticism is that the shows just features bad writing. It's that simple, now it seems better in the first ep of SNW, the melodrama is mainly restricted to little cutaways, the occasional soap level monologue (but nowhere near the same level as STD) and just unnecessary scenes and lines reminiscent of a student film script. Those elements, while extremely less prevalent in SNW are still there.

They need a full clear out of the writers room and show runners of the entire Star Trek department and start with a new crew. While SNW is definitely better than the other shows and it does show promise I fear it may do what the other shows have done and just chose the wrong path with every decision. The bad writing at the core of nuTrek makes me hesitant to hope it will improve but it, at least for now, it stands on firmer footing than any of the shows thus far. 6.5/10
