S1 Ep10: Not sure about the casting of James Kirk

-Dude didn't seem to really fit the role for me, and actually, neither did the Roman captain. But whatever.

-If you're old-skool and know all about the Balance of Terror, then you can really appreciate this episode. We even got some old-skool music.

-No Hemmer, but did we hear Scotty?

-Uhura pimpin' the original outfit. Too bad we didn't get to see the whole thing.

-Seems Pike is destined for that "chair" no matter what.

-Missed opportunity: Since Spock got put in the position of Pike, it would've been a powerful scene if we had seen Spock in the wheelchair instead.

This show has been great. The only thing that bites about it is that there were only 10 episodes. Really looking forward to Season 2. I'm still wondering why Paramount is stuck in this era with it's shows. No progression at all.

Guy who played Kirk was awful. Looked and acted nothing like him.

I agree that he (the actor that played Kirk) did not fit but I do not think he did a bad job, just was not the right fit. I blame casting

This actor was no Kirk. Kirk in TOS was stronger looking, very handsome, with such dang swagger. This guy exuded confidence fine, but he certainly didn't command a room like Shatner's Kirk did. Shatner's Kirk was also self-reflective, taking time to think things through internally. This guy was all about 'blow 'em up and don't show fear and no hesitation'. I dunno, he didn't fit for me.

I've enjoyed this season a lot. They are really trying to push that TOS feeling (which I appreciate) and also trying to keep true to the timeline. I got to think they have a room full of Trekkies who point out breaks in continuity.

Totally agree. Main issue is he had none of Shatner/Kirk's speech cadence. That kind of thing doesn't change with age, which I could argue his cowboy attitude in this episode did - except with respect to Klingons. My biggest issue was the Romulan mega-weapon. No sign of that in any of later-in-the-timeline episodes and it's not something they would just lose or forget.

Just saw this ep (bought the blu set , watched first and last eps so far, I'll try Gorn/Aliens next), yeah 'Kirk' is distracting, not much of a Shatner vibe which is a letdown (remember numerous comments at the time saying he was like Jim Carrey SNL Kirk meets Bewitched guy lol) in fact I bet his role in season 2 gets limited after the reaction to this ep. the episode itself was one of those solid time travel/alt timeline episodes. In addition to the Federation Romulan war starting with Balance of Terror (meaning most of TOS wouldnt take place) taking Spock out of the timeline (his Trek II radiation end brought decades forward) would obviously cause massive upheaval, in fact maybe earth isn't even around in alt-future Pikes time (Spock was instrumental in saving earth from V'ger and the Whale Probe )
