LOL!!! I agree, I like my solitude as well, but I wouldn't leave NY and go into the woods with zero people around. Nowadays you can find decent solitude amongst or near civilization.

Unacceptable? Why?

It's not like she took off into the woods with nothing but a compass and a book of matches.

Both her friend she spoke to on the phone and the nice man who rented her the cabin knew where she was. She told the sheriff when she met him she planned to be there for months, so she must have planned access to facilities for food and laundry.

She had a car, a computer (for email/Skype) and a cell phone, which in all fairness she did kill by dropping it in water.

Didn't Johnny say when giving her directions that the cabin was @ 10 miles back from the gas station? That's a ways back but not unreasonably out of civilisation's reach.

It's not something I would do either - I'm a city girl myself - but she specifically told her friend on the phone she worked better that way, i.e. out in the boonies. Different strokes, I guess.

Anytime you travel, you risk not knowing about your phones reception, and in case of an emergency, a young woman should at least have a weapon with her. She was alone, and surrounded by forest.

Other then her cellphone, she had nothing.

She had mace. I don't think it was enough, personally, but she had that at least.

Well most people don't expect to be attacked by group of sadistic rednecks, Jason Voorhees or giant frog from outer-space while going to vacation.

reply

I don't know how would a phone or the internet work in bumfark no where. The very least thing she should've had was a all weather sat phone.

reply

I don't think "unacceptable" is the right word. Strange, yes. If I was a writer I sure as hell wouldn't be doing what she did.

seriously? she was in a small town area...in a cabin.

My cottage is about 15km off the main road and about 40km from any town of a decent size.

No other people except on the other side of the lake. Is it safe...yes...LOVE going up there by myself. it's relaxing. Do I go up in winter on my own? no...cause I don't feel like getting snowed in again. but in summer....you better believe it.

My home country is mostly rural and countryside. People seek out for places of peace and quiet and solitude. To me her being there on her own was the least unacceptable thing about this wee fairytale. When I go to the cottage that's a boat and a drive away from the nearest gas station, I don't pack a gun. I pack a swimsuit.

reply

I did find it strange that she was out there all alone. I've seen documentaries of women out in the middle of nowhere alone and it scares the crap out of me to think about it. The only solitude I want is one room in a house full of people surrounded by other houses full of people.

my place is not as isolated as in the movie, but isolated enough (nearest neighbor is a block away, and have lots of empty lots around)

anyway, i dont mind living in a place like this but i make sure my house is secured all the time, all door locked all the time, dogs around the house. police on quick dial.

Here in this movie we see a young, innocent woman being tortured, sodomized, beaten and nearly shot dead, and all you're "infuriated" about is where she lives? Jesus Christ!

Quite right! If she has the right to abort her fetus she sure in hell has the right to be in a isolated area if she chooses.
