What's with the lisping?

When Portman portrays the actress playing Gracie, she lisps. At the end of the film, when Moore plays Gracie, she also lisps. But I never heard a lisp before that from either. Portman seems to overdo it. Is that supposed to mean something? I found it silly.

The lisp seems like an affectation. Not natural nor inherent but something she puts on for effect. Mary Kay Leterneau has a little girl voice that she puts on as an affectation too.

Perhaps you mean the actress Moore "puts on for effect", but if you refer to the character Gracie "puts on for effect", why would she do that? What purpose would that serve for her to try to sound like a little girl? It was overdone, especially by Portman.

Julian Moore puts on the affect bec the character Gracie puts on the affect? Why? Who knows. To look sweet and vulnerable. Regardless it is based on MKL doing it in almost every interview. And since this is highly influenced by her, including her hairstyle and those past photos, we have it here.

Yes Portman overdoes it purposely as all films do it. You'll notice the exaggeration on many bio or historically influenced films. You'll also notice that Portman's film is just a tacky tv movie, not the high brow film everyone expected.
