Hard to imagine such drab, frumpy people involved in such passionate situations.

The real people were even homelier than the actors. You can't just blame the 1980 hair and clothes, either.

Bizarre to imagine them having affairs and murdering one another. What about them could possibly inspire such raw, savage emotion?

Ha. 100% Agree.

I'm sure it was passionate, but at least in this film and A killing in a Small Town, nothing seemed anything worth more than a 1 night stand. Like her husband who seemed like a good man was not any less attractive then new Gore, and seemed more exciting? (But at least not in bed>) It was so bizarre.

I will say this, I think the original Betty was more attractive then how they made-up Melanie Lynskey in the movie. The only reason I can guess is because Candy was not this HOT looking leave your girl for me type of woman in real life, least for me.
But as far as the men. Laughable.

That seems to be the common thread in the vast majority of these true crime documentaries / podcasts / TV dramas set in small town America.

I think that when people's lives are so repressed, routine and filled with suburban ennui, once they get a small taste of excitement, a lot of them don't know how to process it and craziness ensues.

Most people are not good looking

The ugly hair and clothes makes it more interesting.
