Fans of the novel - initial reactions to mini-series

I actually saw the mini-series before I read the book. Just wondering because of the hysteria over this new adaption, what did fans of the novel innitially think when seeing commercials and pictures for the 1990 mini-series?

I read the book first, thought it was outstanding. Saw the mini-series a few years later - it was probably 2001/2002 - and thought it was garbage. Awful music, hammy acting, bad effects, campy Pennywise.

I read the book the summer before the miniseries came out, and while I enjoyed the first half and the performances by the child actors, the second half was less than satisfying. As for the series as a whole, in addition to mediocre writing, directing and (adult) acting (Curry, Reid and to a lesser degree, Anderson acquit themselves, but the other adult leads ranged from "meh" to godawful) it suffers from the same thing The Stand suffered from: there is simply too much material in the novel to fit in a 3.5 hour miniseries. On top of that, some of the characters, most notably Eddie and Stan, were changed too much from the novel. Eddie was my favorite character in the book (along with Ben); I can't say the same for adult Eddie in the miniseries. They ruined Nick Andros - my favorite character in The Stand - much the same way in that series.

The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those that speak it.

It was great......up to the point of adult Ben and then its like the writer changed because it was horrible.

The film scared the *beep* out of me as a kid.

I read the book when it was first published. I was a junior in high school, and it scared me. Very well written, and even though the novel is huge, I couldn't stop reading it.

I watched the tv version, on premiere night, while battling the flu. I loved the first half, found part two to be lackluster. I thought the adult actors, were all wooden, and not taking the material seriously. I felt like I was watching, one of those Judy Garland/Mickey Rooney movies. "Hey everyone! There's a monster in town! Let's get'em!"

Still, it was a good adaption, hindered by network censorship.
