Fuck cancer

Great doc but it's sad seeing what he goes through today with his Trach and how his voice is. The home movie bits from his childhood and behind the scenes of movies was really cool

reply

I haven’t seen the doc yet. Is it true he used non traditional means to deal with the throat cancer instead of standard medical practices?

reply

No the chemo and radiation destroyed his throat or thats what he says at the start

reply

He had been smoking cigarettes since he was 8 years old and was addicted for years. He’s lucky to be alive.

My grandfather smoked since he was 10 and had a pack a day until he was 50 when he had a heart attack and quit for good. But it was already too late as he died from vascular dementia at 72. Those tobacco companies did everything in their power to keep people addicted to their products.

reply

I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather, I've lost several family members to lung cancer those tobacco companies are pure evil and none of them ever went to jail for killing millions of people.

reply

My grandparents smoked all thier lives with no real serious health problems. They both made it into thier 90's. Everyone's different..

Yeah, why did it have to be the throat too? Literally screwed most of his acting career. Could it not be removed from early detection? I heard he kept quiet about it or denied it for about a year before coming out. I don't get how it progressed so far to the point where he can barely talk and needs a feeding tube of sort. I want him to be the badass in Maverick but I dunno how they'll portray him in the sequel as Iceman. Maybe they'll CGI him like they've done with other actors?

reply

Most likely they will have Maverick going to his (Iceman's) funeral at the start of the film. I think I recall seeing a leak about it sometime back

reply

Watching it right now. Fuck, so he quickly healed from throat cancer yet the extensive radiation and chemo treatments THEREAFTER left his voice impaired. It's like a botched up plastic surgery with MJ. How is it that 'treatments' left long lasting damage instead? Kinda brings it around to the vaccines. Just really unlucky or bad doctors I wonder.

It says he's still recovering and it's difficult to talk and to be understood. How long does recovery take? Hasn't this been happening since 2015?

I have to say he's a staunch hoarder (in a good way) of his life's record from audition tapes to filming friends and the likes. That's what I call dedication to the arts.

Gave me goosebumps once 1985 appeared.

His father was also a prick who used him to try to live the American dream of becoming a land baron and signing off shell companies under his name to avoid paying taxes.

reply

The radiation treatments are are almost medieval I wouldn't wish it upon anybody. Very often the cancer victim comes out of it like Val, just lucky to be alive.

Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams from sources such as X-rays and protons to deliver radiation to the cancer cells, causing them to die.

Radiation therapy can come from a large machine outside your body (external beam radiation), or radiation therapy can come from small radioactive seeds and wires that can be placed inside your body, near your cancer (brachytherapy).

For small throat cancers or throat cancers that haven't spread to the lymph nodes, radiation therapy may be the only treatment necessary. For more-advanced throat cancers, radiation therapy may be combined with chemotherapy or surgery. In very advanced throat cancers, radiation therapy may be used to reduce signs and symptoms and make you more comfortable.

From what I could research, Val never really says what stage his throat cancer was. It mentions advanced throat cancers so I would assume his was somewhat late stage and he didn't catch it early on, hence the radiation + chemo combo. So drugs or immunotherapy were not possible? Why not surgery to remove the nodes then attach lab grown skin/flesh to help seal up any holes or whatnot before the healing process. I wish he gave more info about his throat condition and the path he choose to get rid of it.

Me too dude, when Top Gun Anthem hit that shit was awesome

reply

Val is a Christian Scientist and when he first developed cancer he denied he had it then he decided he would "treat" it without medicine or medical doctors. That went on until his obvious deterioration alarmed his children who intervened and insisted he get medical attention.
