From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, THE HOLDOVERS follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them -- a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) -- and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).

They ran this trailer before Oppenheimer last night, and it was a breath of fresh air. At first I thought it was a vintage trailer for a film about to be re-released, and it plays a lot like one, right down to the final freeze-frame. Had I not already been looking forward to seeing The Holdovers, I would be after seeing the trailer.

Watched it yesterday. Very much presented as a film from the 70s including ratio and film scratching and popping during the opening

I also watched it yesterday. The entire opening sequence was done in a very retro late '60s/1970 style, right down to the look of the logos.

Love, love, loved this trailer. Has that magical coming of age movie feel like Rushmore or Licorice Pizza and I laughed out loud like three times. Looks like it might be one of my favorites of the year.
