"After incessant questioning, Hunham confesses to Angus that he was expelled from Harvard after assaulting a peer, the son of a legacy donor who framed him for plagiarism, which ruined his career prospects. Thanks to the charity of one of his former teachers, he was able to secure a teaching position at Barton."

reply

i think it was post graduate school

reply

Probably not. He could have gotten a teaching job at a private school with just a bachelor's degree. He could have left Harvard off his resume and nobody would know the difference. But without a bachelor's degree, he would need that kind of help to get a teaching job at any school.

A "legacy donor" was probably for undergraduate school.

By the early 1980s, most good universities expected a masters or doctorate to get a teaching job. It affected ratings by accreditation boards.

reply

what i meant was he got expelled from post graduate school meaning he already had a bachelor's and master's. i have to go back and look a the scene.

reply

Again…if he was kicked out of a doctoral program…it wouldn’t have been some crazy thing for him to get hired at a boarding school

reply

When he revealed the expulsion from Harvard to Angus, he admits when they are outside the liquor store that he never graduated college.

reply

i went back and looked at it. he was expelled for plagiarizing his senior thesis. which would imply he was in a master's or doctoral program. but he clearly tells the kid that he never finished college. i find it confusing.

reply

I agree that it is confusing. Most undergrad degrees do not require a “thesis”. That kind of implies a Master’s at a minimum. Maybe prestigious private boarding schools required advanced degrees back then?

reply

i would assume he would have needed at least a masters degree to get teaching job in a private school.

reply

Senior thesis are conducted in senior year of college. But yes, a thesis can be completed for a master's program; a dissertation is for a doctorate program. He would be able to get a teaching position at a private school without any degree as private schools have their own requirements.

reply

i have never heard of a senior thesis for a bachelor's degree.

reply

A high school degree? Yes.
