Married to a beautiful lawyer and he's a loser?

Bollocks.

You're all missing the point. It doesn't matter how you or anyone else perceived his life to be. Yeah to you a job as an accountant and a beautiful spouse may mean you succeeded in life, but he saw things differently. He saw himself differently, and he wanted more. He thought he'd be doing more, and thought he was capable of more, and in the end it's obvious by his pursuit of the CIA job, he set out to prove it. We all have different paths in life. It's not wise to envy or judge other peoples. One mans heaven may be another mans hell. Remember that..

I agree. He grew up being the star of the high school! He was great at everything and I guess he felt like he had let himself and everyone else down by becoming an Accountant. It has nothing to with field itself, he just thought he would be a Congressman or Governor. To him the field of Accounting was not much.

She's gorgeous. and he seems to have a good job. People seem to have odd ideas about accountancy. It can be a great job. I have a cousin who is married to an accountant, and they have had a fantastic life. his job has taken them all over the world, they've lived in Iran, switzerland, Marseilles, Rio de Janiro, and now he's retired on a really good pension they divide their time between their house in Engalnd and their villa in the south of France. How does being an accountant amount to being a failure?

I think it had more to do with the job itself not the income. You can make money at jobs you want to bash your brains in. I'm sure he sees his wife in a more thrilling job, wishing he picked a different career path. He never once said he was a broke loser, just a loser.. losers come poor and rich.

Exactly. He even says at the beginning of the movie, that he does a job he's good at, not a job he loves. That is true for a lot of people, honestly. We can't all love what we do, but I don't begrudge those that try to find a job they love.

He's a loser because he has no confidence, he's passed up for promotions, does a job he doesn't enjoy, didn't have the child he wanted, works under his former assistant, etc.

He's not some CEO, founder, president, etc. of some huge company, he's not some big stock wiz or celebrity, or athlete, he's some nobody working a 9-5 job he hates making little more than a trash man would with overtime.

He's a loser in his own eyes...not other people.
