Glenn Close's Oscar Win

Expect the Oscar for Close in 2012!

Oh, that would be mindblowing and I would be overjoyed if she won. This seems to be a baity role and she wrote it so I hope she wrote a great role. I think she should have won for Dangerous Liaisons.

reply

I agree! She was the favorite to win that year, and I was sorely disappointed when she didn't. I still watch that film in awe of her performance...

No, no..."cruelty." I always think that has a nobler ring to it.

If she is nominated, there is no way she is losing.

Huge fan of Glenn Close here too. I would be deliriously happy if she wins an Oscar someday. I hope it is for this role. She has been absent among Oscar nominees for a long time (2 decades!).

She won an Obie for 'Albert Nobbs' so hopefully this is a great showcase of her undeniable talents. But Hollywood is fickle and sometimes does not reward great performances. I mean Close was great in 'Heights', 'Cookie's Fortune' and even in 'The Stepford Wives' but she didn't get any awards for those.

The movie seems to generate buzz because of the young and 'hot' stars that jumped on board so hopefully this movie generate a buzz and for Glenn.

i am going to cry if/when it happens. :D

The film has to have a late release date (only movies released in the winter are remembered come awards time) and it has to be at least critically successful.

But yeah, the spectacular cast will be worth the price of admission. During the press conference in Dublin last week, she jokingly called the cast "the most overqualified" she'd ever worked with.

She is one of the best actresses I've ever seen. She should have won for Dangerous Liasions. Hopefully, this will be her win.

I would love Glenn Close to get an Oscar someday. I fully agree she should have won for Dangerous Liaisons. HOWEVER, we must not forget that next year no doubt she will be competing against long-overdue Meryl Streep. The thing is Meryl has got quite a few movies coming up. The Margaret Thatcher biography will surely make it to a 2011 release (All the Oscar baits, too. Biography, British, back to her accent wonders...) I only hope the stage adaptation of October: Osage County, that won its actress the Tony, is released in 2012, so she does not compete against herself. Whatever the film Meryl is nominated for when she competes with Glenn, the face-off will be tough, especially because they are good friends. Meryl is practically a cinch to get nominations 17th and 18th in a row! C'mon! Give the woman a third Oscar after losing 12 consecutive times! She has one Lead and one Support Oscars out of 16 nominations and Hilary Swank has two Lead statuettes of TWO nominations? Mmmm...
And Glenn Close? Well, I was praying they would go ahead with the Sunset Boulevard film version, but that has been apparently cancelled until further notice. THAT would have landed the Oscar on her lap. How can she NOT have an Oscar? That scene in Dangerous Liaisons where she is sitting in from of the mirror is one of the best in film history. She does not speak a word, and yet you see the gamut of emotions she goes through as she hears some unwelcome news.
This reminds me of 1950, with Bette Davis (All About Eve) going against Gloria Swanson (Sunset Boulevard). They split their votes to such an extent that neither won. The upset winner was Judy Holiday for Born Yesterday!

As far as I'm concerned, Glenn Close had the best lead actress performance of 1987 (Fatal Attraction) as well as 1988 (Dangerous Liaisons). But yeah, if one thing can be said about next year's Oscar race is that it will be interesting with Glenn and Meryl possibly going head-to-head with each other.

reply

Hope so! Close and Sigourey Weaver are the most overdue actresses

Glenn Close definitely deserves an Oscar!

She won't be winning anything unless the film finds a US distributor.

Roadside Attractions - who put out Winter's Bone and Biutiful - are distributing Albert Nobbs.

So the Actress race this year should be a very interesting one: Meryl (will she win #3?) vs. Glenn (will she finally win #1?).

I have a message for Germany...

or could it even be jodie foster for a third?
