Don't see Matt and Mavis 'scene' as believable...

SPOILERSSSSSSSSSS***************

If you've been watching the whole film, you know that Mavis would NEVER get together with a guy like Matt. Even if she felt sorry for him and felt down on herself, it is not in that character's makeup to sleep with Matt. She would never be attracted to Matt and she would never see herself doing that.

I think the movie makes it clear that they're both very similar, in how life has passed them by, for various reasons. That made them FRIENDS...but the whole hooking up scene, I found to be very out of place in this film.

I can believe it would have happened, what I'm undecided on is whether it was wrong or right for Mavis to throw herself at Matt. Sure, it might have done him some good in a way, but on the other hand, he clearly had a thing for her, and the whole sex thing might have only intensified his feelings.

"Why do you say this to me when you know I will kill you for it?"

reply

I'm not trying to make any "logical" point here, but I think that just on an emotional level that scene felt honest.

Mavis, I'm a married man!

Oh my god, so funny that somebody would start a thread about this. There's a Louis CK skit where he describes EXACTLY what happened between Mavis and Matt.

"But for guys like me this is not a fun youth. It gets better. I'd like to make one of those it gets better ads, for dumpy young guys. We could use a little help, a little encouragement. Just somebody on TV...listen man, I know it's tough for you man. You're vaguely heavy, with no face. You have zero value on the sexual marketplace, you feel invisible to the girls in school because you are. But it gets better. Because you all grow up. And you pretty much look just like this your whole life. And they don't. Their options start runnin out, really fast. And you're gonna be there. As long as you stay relatively employed and washed, you're gonne be AMAZING in your 40s! You're gonna be the branch that she can grab before she hits the ground! It's gonna be so great! It just takes time for her circumstances to match your looks. But it's gonna happen! It's gonna happen. When real sh i t matters, you're gonna be the sexiest mo th er *beep* er in the world! It's just time, that's all it takes. There's a formula to this. It's pussy + time over income, squared."

If that doesn't describe the situation between Mavis and Matt, then I don't know what does.

So trust me, what happened with Mavis and Matt....it can happen. And it does happen.

I feel like its the very young, naive posters that believe none of this could happen.

No one mention that Mavis is looking for comfort from Matt. Matt was the only one that she was honest with and would go to. After she humiliated herself in front of everyone and found out that Buddy doesn't want her I think she was dumbfounded at herself and everyone. Buddy doesn't want her and she is hurt and embarrassed. So she goes to Matt her confidant and says hide me as in comfort me make the pain go away. She slept with him to make the sadness go away for awhile.

But does Matt always need a science book to speak with, and does Mavis need all her clothes on in bed?

I dunno, I've seen stranger things and more questionable hook-ups in real life. Some women (and men for that matter) do crazy things when they feel scorned, and they turn to weird outlets to try to regain their mojo back.

Now, I do completely agree that the Mavis we saw in the beginning of the film would never have got together with a guy like Matt. That Mavis had spent 17 years building up walls and living the life that she thought would make everyone (the Sandra's of the world) jealous and envious of her. No way she has sex with someone like Matt, for any reason. No matter how "nice" or "relateable" he was. It could have destroyed part of the image she had spent so long creating and she wouldn't allow that to happen.

Mavis was a completely wreck by the time that scene with Matt happened though. All those walls had come down and I don't think she really cared about anything other than trying to fill that emptyness with something.

The fact that it was Matt was a bit "Hollywood", it would have also worked had she just strolled into the bar and slept with the first guy who offered to buy her a drink... also would have made sense if she just drank to the point where she ended up in the hospital. But, I don't think that it was totally outside of the realm of possiblity that it happened with Matt.

When I was young I was never great looking, but I was taller and better looking than Patton Oswalt. There is no way in hell any woman who looked like Theron would have even spoken to me, let alone had sex with me. It is pure homely guy fantasy.
