tbh if i HAD to see a movie at the cinema this year so far id choose this

last movie i saw at cinema was Indiana Jones 5 and before that Mission 7 (by mistake) and The Flash, before that was SW Episode 9 in 2019 ( covid really got me used to not going but i HAD to see Flash for Keaton and obviously Indy. During pandemic I was wanting to see likes of Bond, Batman, Jurassic6, Spiderman NWH, Avatar2 and most of all Matrix 4 but just never got past idea of being in a theatre during a pandemic)

but so far this year NOTHING has given me interest enough to make the effort to head to the theatre once again, not even Apes and im a big Apes fan having seen every one at cinema since Burons Apes. or Furiosa (who cares about Mad Max without Mad Max), i probably will see Deadpool 3 when its out (have seen every Jackman Wolverine at cinema)

but if i HAD to go to cinema right now and see something id most likely pick this , i probably wont be going (unless im in town and its an impromptu thing) but if i had to id see this - for Costner (im a fan of his movies), for the epic scenery, to see a western on the big screen again (think the last and only Western i ever seen at the cinema was actually Dances With Wolves, oh and Cowboys&Aliens in 2011), the idea of seeing something not scifi/superhero genre for once, and to see sienna miller and her 'freshly washed Timotei hair' (from The Guardian review)

I saw it on Saturday and enjoyed it quite a bit and I definitely think you should go out and support the film so that we can hopefully gets Parts III and IV.

As for other movies that were worth seeing on the big screen, Dune Part II was better than the first film and definitely benefits from the theatrical presentation. I also saw The Fall Guy, Bad Boys IV and The Bikeriders in the theater and don't regret it.

reply

Yeah i should really go see it, The Bikeriders is another I'm interested in seeing on the big screen

reply

The Bikeriders was an interesting film. It's less about plot and more about vibe, but holy shit the vibe is on point. The recreation of the time period and the biker subculture is amazing.

reply

Yes thats what I figured as its based on like a photobook or something (like Top Gun was based on an 80s magazine article), should go to see the 60s 'Americana' vibe (bit like OUATIH) and Hardy as Brando meets Butler/Elvis (like if they'd been in a film in the 50s/60s)

reply

I enjoyed it a lot more than I did thought I would would.

Tell me, how did you watch Mission: Impossible 7 by mistake?

By the way, I agree with you, if I HAD to watch a movie in theater right now, it would be Horizon.

I went to see Indiana Jones about a week or so after it came out, when I got to the cinema in evening I found out the showing had been cancelled to allow another screen for Barbie which had just come out and was sold out (I can still see all the masses of women in the foyer dressed in pink), anyway it was either go home or see MI7 which was just about to start , but it was quite annoying/depressing being a huge Indy fan being pumped to see the latest film right then(having avoided spoilers) suddenly having to switch go a movie I wasn't too bothered about and had no intention of seeing on the big screen (the MI franchise had been hit and miss for me , id seen 1,2,3,5 at cinema, missing 4,6 through being busy at the time or seeing other films instead like I was wanting to see Indy - which I eventually did the following weekend)

reply

Do you still feel it was a mistake? Were you miserable having to sit there and watch MI:7 or did you end up having fun and enjoying it? Maybe after you watched Indy the following weekend, you realized MI:7 was actually more entertaining and the better movie after all?

reply

Id say through the first 20minutes I was semi seething at my predicament, like that 'this is wrong!' feeling you get when you're doing something you don't want to bc of other ppl .. After abit i figured OK this is the situation and I have to make best of it, so began to invest in the plot, figuring stuff out that was connected to the previous films, the stunts, Haylee Atwell etc. When I watched Indy the next week I was like 'finally!' and enjoyed every minute of it (maybe not PWB) in fact it probably made it more enjoyable bc id been cruelly denied previously.

But overall theres no comparison, Indiana Jones is like a must see event (for me), and Mission is like take it or leave it, will see it if there's nothing else (or I'll wait for dvd). Obviously Mission started out as a must see in 1996 bc i was a fan of the TV series, but MI2 was bad, 3 was good (the best one imo) but then it sort of became a franchise that wasn't essential to me, so missed 4 at cinema (even though it was the biggest one yet and had the insane tower stunt), 5 saw it as just happened to be in town and wanted to see something that day (unlike Star Wars, Jurassic, Terminator, Mad Max that same year where id specifically planned to see those, very anticipated) , missed 6 (despite like 4 it was the biggest so far, and had Superman in it) and 7 well you know the story now lol

reply

It doesn't seem like you were all that impressed with MI:7. I really enjoyed watching Indy 5, thought they were both great movies. I'm a big fan of both Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones and Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt. But the Indy franchise is definitely better and legendary. Mission: Impossible movies however have a lot more action and amazing stunts though.

reply

It was ok, not as good as Fallout, id put it about midway in the franchise (3,4,6,7,5,1,2, I'm conflicted on where to put MI1, feel it should be higher )

reply

MI1 kicked off the whole franchise and it's directed by Brian De Palma and let's not forget to mention, Emilio Estevez is in the movie! So I think it deserves to be higher on your list.

this is a perfect example of great storytelling,
C. Nolan... take note

I wish people like you would go see this movie to be honest. This idea that because the film is a flop is because its no good is tired and not even remotely true. It's that people aren't putting any effort into their movie watching any more. Costner has made something expansive and exciting to see where it will go and all people are giving him are calls for more instant gratification. He's trying something with this and he's not given a chance and its sad.
