Mads Mikkelsen Roasts Journalist Asking Why His 1750s Danish Film Doesn’t Have More Diversity

Actor Mads Mikkelsen didn’t try to hide his disbelief when a reporter at the Venice Film Festival asked why his latest project — set in 18th-century Denmark — didn’t have more diversity.

“This is a cast and Danish production that’s entirely Nordic, and, therefore, has some lack of diversity, you would say. There’s also new rules implied in Hollywood,” the Danish reporter began before a bemused Mikkelsen cut him off, asking, “What are you on to?” while shaking his head.

The reporter tried to explain:

There is some rules of diversity across the Atlantic for competing in the Best Picture, the equivalence of this competition. Since you don’t live up to those standards with this broad cast, there is, just curious — it’s not because of artistic reasons, but lack of diversity that this can’t compete in that competition. Are you worried about that?

“Are you?” Mikkelsen shot back. “I’m serious about this because you’re putting us on the spot, so you answer the question,” Mikkelsen said.

The reporter went on to explain that although the South Korean film Parasite won Best Picture in 2020, a US-Danish movie with an all-Nordic cast was not eligible in 2024. “That’s what I think is a little bit conundrum,” the reporter said.

YOUR THREAD TITLE IS MISLEADING...THE JOURNALIST DID NOT ASK HIM WHY THE FILM LACKED DIVERSITY...HE WAS ASKING IF MADS WAS CONCERNED THAT THE FILM MIGHT NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR BEST PICTURE BASED ON THE ACADEMY'S NEW RULES.

reply

That was the title of the article.

But yes, the actor responded to the wrong question. I wonder if he had already been asked the other question, or was just anticipating it, becuase Clown World.

But the reporter makes a good point. "Diversity" is clearly bullshit.

reply

At least we finally found out the REAL definition of "Diversity:"

No white people allowed.

Yeah that's how it is, really.

reply

And you wonder why nobody likes watching those crap "history" films where they stick black people into historical roles they were never there for in real life? It looks fake and mocks European heritage. The most insulting ones include those crappy "Bridgerton" stories, the black Anne Boleyn films, the black female viking jarl, that ridiculous "Spanish Princess" series, and the Hollow Crown. They've completely ruined the "Murdoch Mysteries" with their bad writing and diversity bullshit in the past 5-7 years too.

reply

Is Gustav Lindh fully Swedish? Looks exotic, I would guess that maybe he has Iranian ancestry or something.

Reporter: Why were there no references to post op trans people in your movie?

Director: It took place in 1750's...

Reporter: And?

reply

Well, if British and Russian nobility can be black like we've seen in recent movies, I don't see why this movies setting should stop them from having some representation for trans and non-binary people.

It's just fiction, anyway!

Why do you care it's some movie about Danish people living hundreds of years ago? Conservative manbabies are crying again because some actor got asked a tough question.

reply

"Conservative manbabies are crying again because some actor got asked a tough question."

Conservative??? Did you even read the rest of what the journalist had to say? Mikkelsen was acting like a (liberal) crybaby by avoiding to answer a legitimate question.

reply

Just imagine a movie about slavery in south usa with white actors.

reply

Mikkelsen knew exactly where the journalist was going (criticizing the Oscar's ridiculous criteria), but since he's a member of the woke church he was afraid to directly answer the question. His defensive reaction was absurd, it was a legitimate question.
