Cancelled? Retooling?

A report yesterday saying this has been cancelled. Now a different source says it's not cancelled but is being retooled. Doesn't sound too promising either way.

The show was announced in October 2022.

This franchise is jinxed, it's got a death curse!

Jeff Sneider reported in his newsletter The Insneider late last night that A24 has “pulled the plug” on the “Crystal Lake” series, which was due to begin filming sometime this year.

Sneider writes in last night’s exclusive report, “It’s unclear whether this is a permanent decision or a temporary one, as A24 had no comment. Perhaps Peacock will help the trades shed more light on this project, which was announced back in 2022.”

According to Bloody Disgusting’s sources, A24 has NOT killed off “Crystal Lake” at this time. We have confirmed the show is still happening, but there is indeed some retooling of the project happening behind the scenes. We’re digging for more info. Stay tuned.

I was never excited about it anyway.

A drama about how Jason got to be the way he was just didn't interest me. Rob Zombie's Halloween movie went a similar route, and making Michael just a psychopath from a dysfunctional family was disappointing. Kind of mundane, serial killer origin.

I liked him better as kind of a mythic creature whose evil and power is shrouded in mystery.

Have to say I agree. I mean, maybe it'll be/would have been great, but I'd be surprised.

I agree with both of you. I was never interested in a F13 origin story TV show. I want another movie.

Still I would take the series over absolutely nothing, who knows it could have turned out to be decent, but the F13 saga is very simplistic. Get some young protagonists, show them goofing around, let the women take their clothes off, some spooky late night atmosphere and a madman in a mask stalking, chasing and killing them. Simples!

It works best in an 85-95 minute movie with a 3 act structure, introduce the cast, the killing commences, then the final showdown with Jason and the final girl.

Another movie would be good. In the meantime I'll make do with In a Violent Nature which looks interesting.

I like this formula! When something works no need to screw around with it!

I have my eyes on In a Violent Nature. Sadly early reviews are saying it's a major borefest.

Following the killer around may sound cool but if he's mute you have a dialogue-less movie and you won't get to spend much time with the protagonists/victims meaning you're less likely to care for them at all. A lot of the criticisms are the fact you watch the killer walk through the woods for large chunks of the runtime.

I haven't completely lost hope in the movie but I have tempered my hopes and expectations.

Maniac (2012) done a similar killer-POV gimmick to some success I thought.

Very good point.

I enjoyed Maniac (2012) much more than I thought I would.

UPDATE: Bryan Fuller who was producing and writing this series has posted on Instagram.

Adapting classic horror is something I have some experience with. These shows require a vision that elevates and transforms, as well as delivers what audiences have come to expect, which is an ambitious and risky endeavor. It requires people to take the leap with me.

When it works, as with HANNIBAL, the results can be powerful for the storytellers and the audience. I couldn’t be more proud of the work my co-showrunner Jim Danger Gray and I were able to accomplish with our brilliant writing staff despite the challenges we faced.

For reasons beyond our control, A24 has elected to go a different way with the material. We hope the final product will be something Friday the 13th fans all over the world will enjoy.

Some details on the now cancelled Fuller led Friday the 13th show. I wonder what direction the show will be taking now...

Kevin Williamson (Scream, Sick) had been on board to write an episode of the “Crystal Lake” series, and Williamson took to Twitter today to tease some of those original plans.

Williamson writes, “Bummin’ hard, so sorry I won’t be a part of what would have been an epic Bryan Fuller show. Your pilot was so beautifully realized. A gorgeous portrait of a mother unraveling in her grief. Not to mention bloody horrific!”

He adds, “I was so looking forward to our hour long chase episode!“

The director of Cube, Splice and several episodes of “Hannibal,” Vincenzo Natali also took to Twitter this weekend to give us a taste of the “Crystal Lake” series we’ll never see.

Natali tweets, “I have read the first two episodes. Bryan Fuller’s Crystal Lake was well on its way to becoming another Hannibal-level reinvention that was simultaneously beautiful, sad, poetic, funny and horrifying. I mourn its passing.”

A Williamson episode could have been interesting.
