Question about Long John Silver (finale spoiler) for those who read book?

So Long John Silver is a myth that it seems even the real Long John Silver walked away from at the end of this series. I remember watching the old Disney film like a hundred times as a kid and as I remember it Silver was a cook, and former Pirate who killed Flyntt in a backstabbing kinda way. (Is that right?). Anyway, I was wondering if the book goes into more of the story of Silver's return to the myth or if this and the Treasure Island story differ?

In Stevenson's novel, Flint has died in Charleston of acute alcohol poisoning.

Silver was a cook and inn owner (with a black wife who managed his property) in Bristol.

In the book, at first Silver is Jim Hawkins' mentor and father figure (who shoots Israel Hands as he's about to kill the lad). Later he is revealed to be an opportunist who rules the mutiny.
