Does anybody find the theme song not only terrible...

But does not fit the show at all? To me the song is so out of place...

Anyway, I like season 1 better than season 2.

It's worse than chalk on a blackboard. Since the first time I heard it I either mute it or fast forward through it if I can. I find it excruciating to listen to.

But in an odd way I do think it kind of fits the show because sometimes I find the show excruciating. Lol

"I'm not foul, Mr. Carson. I'm not like you, but I'm not foul."

Hey how are you ? You know I often thought the same thing . I find it exceptionally irritating and always skip through it. I was shocked when I heard it was written by Fiona Apple because I actually like her music, but barely recognized her voice here.

I read on an interpretation that the song lyrics were specifically tailored for the content of the show and its characters...

"I have only one thing to do and that's be the wave that I am and sink back into the ocean"

^It symbolizes the characters consciously creating destruction, wrecking not just their lives, but others ('the echo that I created') and not wanting to take responsibility and consequences, just 'sink back into the ocean' in other words walk away from it freely and leave it all behind. It's echoes the selfish nature of the characters throughout the show.

Good to know. I've never heard her before and thought this was how she sounded.

I do think the lyrics fit the show, but dislike the song, or her voice. I wouldn't have minded hearing it as part of the score in an episode, but for an opening song it was a bad choice and I do skip past it.

Nope, can't say I do. It's a great little tune, it's sung beautifully and is about the water, death and family which are all themes in the show. We love the titles in our house.

reply

I love the song as well...I sing along when it starts and I always picture the character of Allison singing the song and not Fiona Apple. I think I read somewhere , probably here, that Treem approached Apple to write it. IMHO it's perfect!

Love the theme song get chills every ep! It fits the show so well

reply

I hated it at first, but then found I could not get it out of my mind - especially when the subtitles showed me that it was "be the WAVE that I am" and not "the WAY that I am." Fitting because a wave can be destructive, but then it sinks back and it's like it was never there. This can fit so many characters in the show.

Thank you. I keep meaning to track this song down but never remember.
The image of a wave starting from some event, setting in motion what is going to happen and then receding once done. I think it is perfect for the themes of this show.

I hate the song at the beginning, but it's grown on me.

There is no theme song I despise more than season 2 of "The Leftovers". I would rather be forced to listen to Fiona Apple's "Container" from "The Affair" on an endless loop for a day then have to hear the theme to "The Leftovers" without being able to FF for even one episode.

Remember us, for we too have lived, loved and laughed

Not my favorite song in the world, no.

But it's haunting and, to me, fits the show quite well.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

reply

I hated season 2 leftovers song as well...arg! Love the season 1 song even though I felt sad and bleak after I heard it....

reply

I didn't hate "The Leftovers" S2 theme as much as I thought it was totally out of place for the show. How did you like S2, BTW? I didn't. IMO, that was a really sharp turn for the worse in S2...

They gave the show one more season, but I really don't care for it much. The move from New York to Texas (and it's new unlikeable characters) pretty much destroyed the show.

reply

I actually love the song

I DVR the show, and when the theme song starts I fast forward.

I can't stand the song.

I cringe a little every time it comes on....
