Because people like boring movies, hahahaha.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Because according to those who disliked it, people that apparently know nothing about quality came and conquered.

Certainly it did way better than almost anyone expected it to. Neat.

Um, it had to do with a lot of things:

1.) All the fans of the original film went to see it (me included) and rode on the nostalgia wave, for the first viewing. After that we're all like....."Meh. Cartoon was better."

2.) People brought their kids to see it, (which is a bad idea if they're under 6, but their dumbass parents brought them anyway).

3.) The LGBT crowd went nuts, despite the fact that Lefou's "gay scene" was nothing to sneeze at. It was 2 seconds long--blink and you'll miss it. I've seen gayer stuff in my breakfast cereal. (That's what Honest Trailers actually said, not me, lol).

4.) Fans of Emma Watson, Luke Evans, and Josh Gad wanted to see it, after watching the "Harry Potter" movies, the "Hobbit" films, and "Frozen."

5.) Curiosity. People had already seen live-action versions of famous Disney films such as "Cinderella," "Alice in Wonderland," "Maleficent," and "The Jungle Book." So they wanted to see how Disney would interpret this story into live-action form.

6.) Costume enthusiasts were eager to see how Disney would re-interpret the live-action characters' costumes, versus the cartoon characters' costumes. They were sorely disappointed.

7.) Obviously the power-players in Hollywood gave it a boost, because the viewers certainly didn't. The idiot liberals in Hollywood eat this stuff up like candy.

The reasons you state above do a great deal of explaining what made it a hit and why it was so anticipated. News talks and walks. I think a lot of people too were curious to see what an already dark story in the animated version would look like in a gritty live-action adaption, especially with it being released under Disney's castle family label. Think of "Pirates of the Caribbean" type atmosphere but will ball room spectacles and a more romantic bent.
