I hope it's not a trilogy

I hope this is not a trilogy and is not a series...

Filmmakers should aim to make their movies stand alone, instead of holding back or making room for further follow ups... Film is not TV...

reply

Well it is based on the first novel of a trilogy. However its performance seems to indicate a sequel is unlikely.

Yes... That's what inspired my post.

I think filmmakers should not take it for granted that they'll even get the chance to do follow up movies... They should go for it and not hold back in the first movie.

I believe that would be easier with a standalone novel than source material that is written as a first part of a trilogy. When you decide to adapt something like this novel you generally have to go in with the thinking that you are going to be making 3 films (or four in the case of studios that want to take advantage of fans and split the last novel). They are adapting the series not the just the novel.

Movie stars don't have quite the impact they used to when it comes to being box office draws so studio are pushing out brands. MCU, Star Wars, Hunger Games, DCEU, so on and so forth. If the brand name clicks you have a set of films that will hopefully profit.

Hell Cloverfield is a perfect example of this. Would the last two films received any real attention if they had not slapped the Cloverfield name on it? This is the world we live in now where the brand is more important than the stars, stories and performances.

True... I agree with your analysis... People used to have the habit if going to the cinema regularly and taking a chance in movies... Movies showed long enough to build word of mouth, and it mattered... Times have changed...

But, there is a more artistically satisfying way of doing it... Instead of a trilogy, or just doing the first book, why not a two and a half hour movie that does the three books in one? Especially as this has ended up on video-on-demand instead of in theatre around the world...

It seems as if that option is no longer considered at all...

Probably way too much material to squash it down to a 2 1/2 + hour movie and also you have to deal with the issues that arise with such a long film and the audiences mentally tuning out.

MCU is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing because it has produced so many quality film experiences. A curse because other studios are trying to imitate so the moviescape is littered with failures and ill advised movie universes(DCEU). Too many big films are trying for a piece of the pie and failing and we are left with film like this one or the Mummy. It’s not just MCU either, this film is more a direct result of successful book universes like Harry Potter and Hunger Games.

The book is a trilogy, but the screenplay was written after only the first book was complete. So if there is a sequel, then it will probably deviate from the books, which are quite different.

Interesting... Thanks 👍

Oh God, I hope not.
This one was boringly awful as it is.
