Here are two articles that describe the differences between the movie and the real case:

http://www.ibtimes.com/conjuring-2-true-story-9-freaky-facts-about-real-enfield-haunting-movie-release-2380263

So basically the differences were:

1. The Warrens didn't have much involvement with the case.

2. There was no Valek demon.

3. There was another ghost named Stuart.

4. Activity continued in the house for several decades.

yes, but it is exxagerated for dramatic reasons.

What do you think?
True?
Of course it wasn't

reply

Is any movie based on a true story actually what happened in every detail?

Of course not, it's just a matter of how much is made up and how much isn't. Just to give an example Tusk (2014) is labelled to be based on a true story, but the only true thing about it is that it was a man who wrote a note on craigslist that he wanted someone to be their personal walruss, and that was it.

The whole movie was written as a hypothetical situation of this man and his desires... And the man in question in real life didn't even have that desire, he was just pranking craigslist when he wrote it.

And of course Titanic was based on a true story in terms of the ship and that it sunk but all characters and relationships to eachother were all fictional.

So yeah not much is needed to actually have happened in order for a movie to be 'based on a true story'.

In this fact what is true is location and the people involved (although the Warrens were only there for 1 day... at least officially, but most probably in real life too).

Most people believe it all to been a hoax, you can watch the real youtube footage and make your own opinion though... Here is the real BBC documentary that is depicted in a scene in the movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sls6pszMGfk

To me it appears that it's just a girl looking for attention by pretending to have a poltergeist inside her

A good father and a good outlaw can't settle inside the same man.

was a documentary on it all but most thought it was all fake and I'm sure some of the family said it was fake also

reply

reply

Just like in the film....The girls were caught trying to fake stuff.
You only have to watch the documentary to find this out.

As always its been over-glorified (very much like in the Annabelle movie) and hardly anything that happens in the movie happened in the "real" case. The family that it famously happened to (The Harper/Hodgson family) had little to almost no contact with the Warrens, and the case was actually looked into fully by Maurice Grosse. He's the guy along with Guy Lyon Playfair that pretty much documented everything paranormal that happened. The bits that are close to the real case are Janet's supposed possession and the fact her voice changed into that of an old man named - an area of the case that is still very much up for debate and considered as nothing more than a hoax by many. What did make it interesting though was that a couple of Police Officers and other members of the public were apparently witness to some of the activity (including a passer-by who swore she saw Janet levitate). As a skeptic I'm highly dubious of the whole thing, but it was one hell of an interesting case that's for sure.

If you haven't already, check out Playfair's book "This House Is Haunted". Its a damn good read, and oddly enough I find the supposed true events much creepier than the movie. Which to me was fun but laughable at best. The same can be said for the true events behind the first Conjuring come to think of it.

Thanks for your informed and informative comments. I've heard one or the other of those two investigators, and one of them strikes me as quite uncritical. Also, with all of this stuff supposedly going on, I'm always disappointed by those God-awful "levitation" photos of one of the girls clearly jumping off a bed and being photographed mid-jump... Anyway, as you pointed out, there are probably still some things that need full explanation, especially the reports of witnesses outside of the family...

Interview with a poltergeist is on youtube.Check it out.

No worries, I'm a bit of a nut when it comes to following paranormal cases as although I remain skeptical, I still believe that this kind of subject needs to be looked into more thoroughly. If it were true or proved the implications of it would be huge.

Yeah I see what you're saying. The famous photo of Janet levitating (jumping IMO) has always been a hot debate in the community. What a lot of people seem to ignore though was that she was a pretty decent gymnast at school apparently. There's also been several occassions where she found out to be playing things up a bit, so there's that to keep in mind as well. As you say though, that doesn't account for other members of the public (especially 2 respected Police Officers) witnessing poltergeist activity. That part is definitely bizarre unless it was a mass hallucination, which I find equally hard to believe.

Bastasch;
Remember we're talking about the 70's here. Catching a kid jumping off a bed in a "freeze-frame" like that would have been nearly impossible with any camera commercially available at that time. It would have required special equipment and high-speed film, not your average Kodak off-the-shelf. Even the best of 30mm cameras (My Grandmother was heavily into photography during this exact period) would capture only motion blur without a special lens and precisely the right film.

This signature really brings the room together, Does It Not?

Is this really a true question ?

My dads work colleague lived in the house for 12 years. He said he saw/heard absolutely nothing and recently moved because he was so fed up of people constantly outside. Apparently people had no issues knocking on the door at 11pm and asking to have a look inside!

reply

Wow, thats awesome. To be fair as I follow a lot of paranormal cases I'd probably do the same and piss off your Dad's mate too haha! ;)

It was HUGE front page news back in the late 70's, and probably Britains most famous possession case, so I'm kinda not surprised that it still attracts investigators and/or weirdos! I can't imagine what living down that road at Halloween must be like.
