Something i was wondering about..

I read all the books in the Dollanganger series years ago. Recently, i have been thinking about what happened to Chris and Cathy and what their lives would have been like if for example Christopher Sr had not been killed and him and Corinne had lived together happily married to a ripe old age or if after he was killed she had remarried a local man who would accepted the four children. Would Chris and Cathy been drawn to each other somehow anyway, because their whole family was kind of doomed? I know its crazy but this just got me thinking about it all.

I think that is an interesting question. I don’t think Chris and Cathy would have ended up together. Part of the story is about isolation and how it makes people who otherwise would not be together in a romantic way, become connected. I think Corrine and Chris Sr were similarly isolated in that gloomy house. Her father and Mother were strict and didn’t likely let Corrine socialize much, so she connected with the young man who was in the house- however inappropriate the relationship may be.

thats a good point. ty for responding..

But, wasnt it mentioned that Corinne went to a private school, wouldnt she have socialized there?

reply

Maybe it was a girls school.

The whole family seemed "off" from the beginning. The father/daughter relationship was already questionable. Incest was probably a way of life for them.

There seemed to be a lot of incest in the family's background....however I don't think Cathy and Chris would have done it if they're father hadn't died and they didn't end up in that attic. Remember it was really because of the insolation and going through puberty and all being trapped together that made them get feelings for each other. I do think however that the truth about their parents being related would have come out another way though possibly and the mother would have eventually shown her true colors.

Chris and Cathy were destined to fall in love.
