the KINKS!

I know it's mentioned at least once in a post but I have to say, as a Kinks fan, that I was so glad to hear the familiar sounds of Till the End of the Day towards the beginning of the episode. I felt as giddy as I did in the Pilot when they started playing Apeman. Which really fit Phil at the start of the series.

Then they used Supersonic Rocket Ship as the closer to season 1, in a very fitting way with Sudsy on the space station. So I'm curious (and hopeful) to see what Kinks song they close the season with.

Till the End of the Day really describes where Phil and Carol were at the beginning of season 2. In love. Roaming the country.

"We live this life
From when we get up
Till we go sleep at night
You and me we're free
We do as we please
From morning, till the end of the day"

I've said before that if there were an Emmy for Best Use of the Kinks in a Television Series, TLMOE would win twice already.

reply

Agreed -- TTEOTD was the perfect choice for the pair's White House adventures. That absolute joy and freedom. 

Though I suppose if there had been a full montage of Carol's drawings depicting her and Phil's travels over the past six months, "Picture Book" would've made for a great score...

As for the finale, depending on how it ends:

1) "This is Where I Belong" would be perfect if and when Mike Miller comes down from space and reunites with brother Phil;

2) "Better Things" could go well with a bit more open-ended yet still hopeful and promising conclusion.

I love your post.

And agree 100?

fYI - its sad that Fox refuses to offer Season 1; on Blu Ray HD. Not cool forcing digital sales! Very big brother!

My guess is the cast and in particular Kristen Joy Schaal understands. It's old school. Offer season 1 on Blu Ray-HD.

I heard Conan was also upset.

I don't want to take away someone at Fox not getting their non fat pumkin chai. ..
Stop being digital streaming whores!

Take care of the true fans!

Guess we didn't have to wait for the finale for another Kinks song... 

"I Need You" played while Phil and Todd were makin' bacon!

Yup, I got up and danced. What a great scene too, with them experimenting (the cheese whiz on bacon made me gag a little). And as usual it was the perfect Kinks song for that moment.

reply

It's great they are playing the Kinks, very underrated band.

Glad a show is playing something other than You Really Got Me, and I don't see Lola or A Well Respected Man fitting anywhere into this show, unless it's used in a completely ironic sense, which could be acceptable I guess.

reply

I actually think any scene where they could work Lola has the potential to be utterly hilarious!

Especially if Todd is involved.

reply

Funny you guys mention "Lola", because I was thinking if Phil 1 (and Carol) could somehow contact his brother in space, I would love more than anything for the Miller brothers to sing something together -- and I think both Will and Jason would sound great doing that song. 

That, or maybe a flashback of them doing karaoke (which Jason and Will have both said they've done a lot of in real life)... 

I wonder if "Father Christmas" will turn up in this episode...

CAROL GETS IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT ON AN ALL-NEW “THE LAST MAN ON EARTH” SUNDAY, DECEMBER 6, ON FOX

Along with most human life, the virus wiped out normal traditions and holidays. As Christmas approaches, Carol spearheads a “Secret Santa” gift exchange to spread some festive cheer in the all-new “Secret Santa” episode of THE LAST MAN ON EARTH airing Sunday, Dec. 6 (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (LME-209) (TV-14; D, L)

I like the way you're thinking here grchereck. Both Lola as a duet and Father Christmas in a secret Santa episode.

Thanks. 

Or if FC doesn't turn up in "Secret Santa," it could still be used in the midseason finale (s.2,ep.10):

THERE'S NO PEACE ON EARTH (OR IN SPACE) ON AN ALL-NEW "THE LAST MAN ON EARTH" SUNDAY, DECEMBER 13, ON FOX

The pressure is on as Gail tries to fix a bad situation, and Melissa and Todd try to recover from their relationship troubles in the all-new "Christmas" episode of THE LAST MAN ON EARTH airing Sunday, Dec. 13 (9:30-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (LME-210) (TV-14 D, L)

I can just picture it being used over a montage of Gail getting into a mess or brainstorming/throwing together a solution... 

I'm a little disappointed -- "Father Christmas" wasn't in either episode. 

It's OK. I'm sure they will be in the finale, even if they weren't a part of the mid-season finale.

I had a brainstorm this weekend too. What if Ray Davies re-recorded the song "Dandy" with new words so it was "Tandy".

As it is now the song could be about Tandy. I mean, this is ripe for parody. RIPE!

"Dandy, Dandy,
Where you gonna go now?
Who you gonna run to?
All your little life
You're chasing all the girls.

Dandy, Dandy,
Checkin' out the ladies,
Tickling their fancy,
Pouring out your charm
To meet your own demands"

reply

That would be cute! 

If there's ever a scene of Mike (if he and Li'l Baby Phil make it safely to Earth) or the other characters wandering around Hollywood, "Celluloid Heroes" would be perfect.

Wes Anderson uses a lot of Kinks songs in his movies. He wanted the entire soundtrack to Rushmore to be Kinks songs.

*bump*

Now that Mike apparently has landed (according to the March 6 episode's press release), he could be "A Long Way From Home" -- or possibly even "In a Foreign Land"...

they should use a couple r stevie moore songs, im so edgy lol

i was obsessed with the kinks at one point in my life, but too me at least, i may be in the minority here but they are way overused in film and tv shows now.

Well, no Kinks this time, but I really liked how the music choices in "Pitch Black" really set the tone without being too literal:

Willie Nelson, "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" (when Mike and his baby worm are traveling on the water)

The Band, "Up on Cripple Creek" (when Mike begins his journey toward Tucson) 

I also could've sworn I heard a bit of Linda Ronstadt's "Blue Bayou" when Mike and Pat were talking on the boat:

I was waiting for it. 😀

And I love both Willie and The Band so I was happy. Especially "Cripple Creek" when he takes off for Tucson. Those two snare drum hits at the beginning... I cheered.

Having a song by The Band especially tickled me, since Jason and Will also sang "The Weight" in one of those "You know what this song reminds me of?" sketches they used to do on SNL:

*beep*

EDIT: Stupid friggin' IMDb turds won't let me post the link (it's embedded on the Tumblr blog F--- Yeah Bill Hader, and I haven't been able to find it anyplace else), but it's the first thing that came up when I Googled "snl song memories zach braff" --
