the KINKS!

I know it's mentioned at least once in a post but I have to say, as a Kinks fan, that I was so glad to hear the familiar sounds of Till the End of the Day towards the beginning of the episode. I felt as giddy as I did in the Pilot when they started playing Apeman. Which really fit Phil at the start of the series.

Then they used Supersonic Rocket Ship as the closer to season 1, in a very fitting way with Sudsy on the space station. So I'm curious (and hopeful) to see what Kinks song they close the season with.

Till the End of the Day really describes where Phil and Carol were at the beginning of season 2. In love. Roaming the country.

"We live this life
From when we get up
Till we go sleep at night
You and me we're free
We do as we please
From morning, till the end of the day"

I've said before that if there were an Emmy for Best Use of the Kinks in a Television Series, TLMOE would win twice already.

"Dreams" from the Percy soundtrack was used in tonight's ep... when the Miller brothers reunited.

I was clapping when I heard the music. Then I realized who that was running up the beach.

Then the punch happened and I screamed laughing. Will Forte really is my kind of crazy.

reply

It just hit me -- how appropriate was it that, to accompany the nut-punch, they used a song by a band led by feuding brothers?  (And for that matter, used the same band to bookend the first season as each brother was introduced?)

Also, I noticed in the preview for the next episode that Phil/Tandy and Mike may be singing something together; even if it doesn't end up being a Kinks cover (the ep shares its name the song "Falling Slowly" from Once, so they might be doing that), I will say this would be pretty much the thing I've wanted most from the show since I first learned of Jason's involvement with it. 

Interesting point! I can see one of them nut punching the other. On stage. Like they've already done. So which one is Ray and which one is Dave?

I would think that Mike would be Ray, even though he's the younger brother, since he's the one with the most success. But I can see Tandy as Ray. And Mike does seem to be seeking that older brother approval.

And you did make that call back in November!

because I was thinking if Phil 1 (and Carol) could somehow contact his brother in space, I would love more than anything for the Miller brothers to sing something together

reply

True -- though I don't think I ever imagined they would be doing a duet in-person so soon. 

I agree, I think each of the brothers is a little of both. 

Their duet of "Falling Slowly" has been posted online ahead of this Sunday's episode:

I was hoping they'd get in one more Kinks song -- maybe "This is Where I Belong" (with Mike in Tucson), or "Days"... 

Still, I loved how "Falling Slowly" became something of a "love theme" for Phil and Mike, and how the original Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova recording was used to score Mike shaving the rest of Phil's head and beard. 

Me too. But also agree that Falling Slowly was used perfectly. That scene had me rolling. Like the pottery scene in Ghost. Cracks me up every time.

reply

Agreed -- as is, the scene was a perfect mix of ridiculous and poignant; I think the idea of using "Unchained Melody" for a straight-up Ghost parody, on the other hand, would've been just too silly.

Also, I just read where The Yardbirds' "Over, Under, Sideways, Down" was used during the end credits -- I don't remember it being played over the air, but I'm guessing if you stream the episode you can hear it:

Bumping this up for the new season... 

"Falling Slowly" is great, but too bad Phil/Tandy and Mike couldn't have done this song as well:

It's obvious someone in production of this show is a huge Kinks fan. They're using really obscure songs, not the typical hit songs that are used over and over. Daylight was on Preservation 1. A really poor selling album that went out of print after the first pressing in the mid 70's. Nearly impossible to find until the CD issued around 2000.

reply

I think it's probably Will Forte. He's the same kind of crazy that Ray Davies is.

Daylight over the village green...

I cheered. Great scene too.

reply

Yep, Will's the resident Kinks fan -- writer/EP Andy Bobrow said as much in one of his DenOfGeek s.2 interviews. 

But yeah, when that song started up, I literally went "YES!!!" with my fist in the air. 

Me, too.  (I'm still rooting for "This Is Where I Belong" and/or "Better Things" at some point...)
