Those fake accents from lead actors. OMG. Its like they were mocking Spanish speaking people

I see what you're saying, emori! This whole reboot/remake of the film version of West Side Story smacks of hypocrisy for the reasons that your mention. I've heard both Rachel Zegler and Ariana Dubose, as well as David Alvarez speak, and since they were all American-born, they, too, used rather false accents in Spielberg's reboot/remake of the film version of West Side Story.

More and more, I've come to believe that a lot of people here in the United States (although not all), who are of a left-wing liberal persuasion, are into their own agenda, with sort of a phony universalism and idealism. It's a small wonder that so many people here in the United States are so fed up with the Left, and that the Right's been winning over in this country for so long.

As another poster on here pointed out, the Jets and the Sharks in Spielberg's film version of West Side Story looked far too much alike, and the dancing was far too hyped up.

Yes, I felt the accents were very fake sounding. I know lots of Puerto Rican people and none of them don't sound like that. Really strange that Spielberg had them speaking like that.

I agree. I wanted to hear authentic New York dialects from the characters. The white characters speak Standard English with a little NY dialect word thrown in from time to time. They didn't sound like poor New Yorkers.

The Spanish accent was a lazy stereotype. New York born Puerto Ricans have their own English dialect which was never used in the film. The actress who portrayed Vasquez in "Aliens" duplicated it with such success that she was mistaken for really being Puerto Rican. A mixture of accents and dialects would've been more realistic since some people would've lived in NYC for a while.

One positive was the Spanish spoken with a Puerto Rican dialect. I was impressed with the accurate pronunciation and vocabulary from what I was able to pick up.
