Where did all zombies went? Did they all get extinct over 20 years?

There should be millions upon millions of them wandering around. Yet Joel and Ellie were driving for hours with not one zombie in sight. Joel was not even afraid of bumping into them and mentioned that they cant be that far away. They entered a big city with no walls and zero zombies in sight and people walking freely and attack outsiders because they are bored.

At this point people can just come out of quarantine zones and start rebuilding civilization. Open factories, make products.

People can't leave the quarantine zones. You must have missed the part about the militarized totalitarian government.

When they enter Kansas City in episode 4 Ellie tells Joel that there is quarantine zone and they see how gates of that is broken and open. It looks like that woman and her people overpowered and thrown away whoever was in charge there. Local version of Fireflies that succeeded. And that doctor was probably among people who were in charge.

And it kinda looks like it happened a while ago. And I didnt see Joel and Ellie run through the broken gates into that quarantine zone when they were ambushed. It looks like they just run into the city streets. Who were not in QZ. They are not trapped inside QZ. They are just lost in city streets. And went to tall building to see where they should go. And not one zombie in sight. Looks like they dont live in Kansas.

Its not the same they had in their ownquarantine zone. When everything outside the wall was dangerous. It does look like there are no zombies in this part of country. Or very little and they are not threat. Or maybe it was lazy writing.

It is hard to say what the explanation is for lack of zombies so far in the show. In the video game, not only did you have to worry about zombies, but also the spores from the fungus itself that was growing in many of the previously populated areas.
