Why Kill/Disable Major Characters?

The Avengers comics have been going for a long time and people love them. These movies have been going strong and there's no way another epic storyline wouldn't be successful.

People would see another Iron Man and certainly Captain America. A well made Black Widow film might do well, so why stop it all?

Characters die all the time in comics and come back, so that could easily be done here, but if not it seems like the company just did away with majorly successful characters.

Plus, it's depressing when comic characters die as superheroes represent a will to live and carry on.

Why do you think they went that direction?

reply

Because death is the ultimate drama and elicits the highest emotional response from the audience.

Plus I think their contracts were up, haha.

reply

Because RECASTING is lame.

And Cap deserved to spend the rest of his life with the woman he loved.

Would you prefer the DC-route of winding up casting a TWIHARD VAMPIRE as Batman?

Didn’t think so.

reply

Several reasons.

In story terms, if nobody dies, is injured, or suffers shocking personality changes, there's no "stakes". The conflict has to affect the heroes for it to seem meaningful. That hasn't happened much in earlier films, so it's happening now in the grand finale film.

In practical terms, several very expensive contracts are running out, and this is Marvel's way of getting their future financial house in order.
