Am I the only who finds Uthred's actor annoying and unfit to the role?

Every time he starts with the opening narrative, it makes me skip through it in a haste. It sounds so fake, "overtrying" to sound more epic maybe or like a strong man? And that "Destiny is all" line is probably the cherry on the top.

I like the show, Leofric was an awesome character with an amazingly well-fitting actor, but Uthred... god I want him gone.

He's ok i find. Not the greatest actor out there, but he plays the idiosyncracies well and the way he plays his character makes for interesting plot development.

He is great at playing arrogant and pompus

Indeed.

I completely agree. He is flat. Trying to hard. Lacks depth. Has no charisma. I came to this board to write the same thing when I came across this post. It's very frustrating if you have read the books. I think he needs a little of a "less is more" approach.

You know it's bad when he has a love scene with Isolde an you feel nothing, zip, 0, nada.

I was disappointed they changed the mantra from the books "fate is inexorable" to "Destiny is all". Perhaps they thought we weren't literate enough.

The rest of the cast is not too bad. I was quite excited when I heard there was a series, but having watched I am overall quite disappointed.

wishy washy? Uthred expected Alfred to trust him as soon as he walked in the door. Alfred didn't.

Totally agree

after reading a lot of the replies apparently you're not the only one..

I think he does a damn good job in the role he has.. he's written that way.. If the director wanted to take the character in a different direction i'm pretty sure that Dreymon could do that as well..

It's like people talking sh!t on Keaanu in the Matrix, though not the best actor he fits the character perfectly. As does Dreymon in The Last Kingdom. He's a good actor playing the role that was written... and for sure looks the part.

"..I intend to live forever......So far, so good..."

I think the character is annoying--wildly immature. (Although he certainly had reasons to be a bit unstable and unyielding.) That's the character as written (for the series, I am not familiar with the books.) He's still supposed to be quite young, and not used to the kind of intrigues and wishy-washy alliances he experienced w Alfred and his court.

I binged this on Netflix yesterday and I was very pleasantly surprised. Extremely well-acted and held my interest. Glad it will have a second series.

reply

I just finished binge watching too and I feel the same as you. I think those who are annoyed by the actor actually just don't get the character or their comparing him to the books.

I didn't know about the books so I don't have a book description to compare him to but I think the actor fits the role. Although he isn't as physically intimidating as the other Danes I think they adjusted his fighting style to make it believable, he is quick versus their brute strength, so you can see why he is still able to defeat them.

As for his attitude many of the other characters keep saying he is an ass, impulsive and childish. The way he is playing it fits that perfectly so I don't see what exactly they find wrong with his acting. If it's the voice over well that is a little unfair.

reply

Haven't read the books; so I have nothing to compare him to.

In light of that I thought Dreymon was great. Just one word of advice: keep your clothes on. All right. You have a great body. We've seen it enough times. Nudity is boring and desperate sexuality.

reply

I just finished the first book after watching the first season and I can say that Dreymon, although he doesn't fit the character's physical description, he embodies the spirit/personality of Uthred.

In 8 episodes he was fully nude maybe three times, twice while he was just bathing and only once during a sex scene. Besides being female with a deep appreciation for the male physique I don't find it boring at all, lol.

reply

The tone completely changes when he comes on screen. The person that called him a smug Jon Snow hit the nail on the head. I quit watching.

reply

What is the tone you think it should have? Surprisingly for the subject matter the tone of the first book is very callous would be the best way to describe it because the story is being told from Uthred's perspective.

I just started reading the books after watching season 1 and even the main character speaking retrospectively says that he was filled with prideful ignorance, cocky and cavalier and just did not fit into the environment of the West Saxons when he was young. If that is the case Dreymon is doing a great job bringing the character to life. Indeed in the books he is a Jon Snow type, an orphan who knows nothing but in Uthred's case he has no humility or sense of duty or honor like Snow.

Either you need a girlfriend or you're working for the show. No one cares about this show that much, get a life.

reply

So, on the basis of the opening minute of each one-hour episode, you damn his entire performance? Imbecile.

reply

agreed, Uthred's actor is just plain horrible in that role

reply

Yes and he has an unusually large and distracting head.
