So much change, for the worse

I have no idea why Dr. K is beyond rude (good luck finding anyone to help you), why Moore is not a crime writer (he would know the seedy side of NYC so much better), why Sara is so formal.

This is a book too hard to capture on TV, but these changes only hurt it.

Dr. K is downright unlikable.

I loved the book, but not this TV miniseries. I think it has been totally mis-cast, especially the roles of Dr. K and Sara.

I don't post on the politics board. You got the wrong poster. But thanks for your insightful posting!

I like Bruhl quite a lot which is why I'm watching this. But they kept mentioning how he took in Mary as child which suggests a big age difference between him and Mary, also between him and Sara since we can assume Kreizler is about the same age as Moore. But unlike the actor playing Moore, Bruhl looks very young and too boyish, he looks the same age as Mary instead of an older figure.

Well, he does look at least 36-37, no? I would have never thought that he is under 30, for instance.

And Dakota Fanning is at the most 23 in this - that is a significant difference.

reply

Without the beard I think he looks 20s to me. Even with the beard at most early 30s.

Dakota looks older in this show though, mid 20s.

I posted on another thread that I don't like Dr. K at all. I find him completely unsympathetic, due in part that the wrong actor was cast for the role.

BTW, Sara is not that formal. A woman smoking in public was scandalous during that time!

Overall though, I am enjoying the series. Moore's character is more 3-dimensional than the others and I like the CSI brothers.

I don’t have to like a character to think the actor is doing a good job. Although I don’t think he is unlikable, only flawed, as we all are. I get tired of perfect protagonists. I think everyone is excellent in this. I haven’t enjoyed a series so much in a long time. I didn’t read the book, however. Sometimes that is a big plus. I’m not comparing it to anything, just enjoying it as it is presented. I’m going to miss watching it with only one episode left now.

I found him unlikable in the beginning as well but I'm coming around to both him and the show. It helps that the sensual filming of the boys have diminished considerably which I found disturbing.

reply

Very much my sentiments; have been enjoying it as well and looking forward to the finale soon.

Sara isn't formal in this series, she's just... stiff.

Either Dakota Fanning has no clue how to play the bold, fearless, brilliant, defiant feminist that was Sara in the book, or the filmmakers thought modern audiences wouldn't like a bold, fearless, defiant feminist. Either way, they replaced the fearlessly brilliant Sara of the book with something in the early stages if rigor mortis, and nobody seems to like the finished product.
