Please help with the ending!!

Was leno abetting lizzie? Did he screw around with the safety that resulted in Aveline being hung for real?

Or did I miss something?

reply

I was also confused by this. Why would Leno tell someone to check on the safety if he was behind it? Or was that just a precaution?

How could it have been Lizzie with how long she spent in jail? Or did Aveline commit suicide?

reply

I think it was just fate.

I don’t get it either. I went to Wikipedia to read the synopsis and it reads that ‘Aveline commits suicide’. She was sad in that scene but it never occurred to me. I ultimately chalk it up to fate though. Doesn’t feel like Dan did it although he could be crazy too.

According to this article, Aveline commits suicide under the pressure :

I thought the original novel may have answers, I did some research but it looks like Aveline is a non-canonical character.

My interpretation is, that Aveline becomes jealous of Elizabeth's success and holds a grudge against her after John Cree, who Aveline herself is interested in, marries Elizabeth. After the trial of Elizabeth, Aveline returns to square one, She finds herself as a not famous actress and feels alone without her beloved John (who she knows is an innocent). Even after the execution, Aveline still sees Elizabeth as a winner, and on top of it, she has to play the rule of her foe in "Misery Junction" play (the play will grant Elizabeth more popularity). Under pressure, Aveline decides to take her own life but in a dramatic way, she thinks hanging herself, in the same way as Elizabeth's execution, may grant her popularity too, which it does not happen.

A note about the hanging scene, it should take at least 4 minutes for death to occur, which means, they shall be able to save Aveline.

I think that's probably what they were going for, but it doesn't really ring true. The movie didn't establish Aveline feeling despondent enough to commit suicide. When she was removing the original copy of the Misery Junction play from the library with the idea of retooling it and putting it on as a performance, she seemed to relish it. Wouldn't playing the now famous murderer Elizabeth Cree on stage each night give her fame?

I read a synopsis of the film after viewing so it appears she did commit suicide, but I agree that it was too ambiguous as depicted in the movie because, as you say, it wasn't established that she was desperate enough to take such an extreme course of action.
