How come no one makes movies about WWI?

Seems weird to me. There has to be lots of great and heroic stories to tell about that war as well.

WW was a good movie but I want to see an epic like Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers set in WWI.

Perhaps it has got something to do with the bad guys. Any good story is really more about the villain than the hero.

WWI is not really a bad guy kind of war story. Unlike for example WWII that has an almost perfect Hollywood villain already (I mean, skulls on their uniforms... come on, that is just unreal) or the Vietnam war and how it often spins the Soviet/Vietcong as classic Hollywood villains too... and those two wars are dominating the cinema for this reason, I think...

WWI on the other hand was just a nasty and pointless situation with no classic villain or even hero. I dare say it would have made little difference at the time if the other side had won... well, except that then WWII probably would never have been, and no Nazism and so no holocaust either, plus Communism might never have risen in Russia either....

Yes, pretty much. WWI was pretty much a pissing match between England and Germany. They were both looking for an excuse to launch hostilities and the assassination of the Arch Duke Ferdinand provided it. Even though considered a world war it was pretty well limited to NW Europe. Czarist Russia still existed and Asia was left out. Had Kaiser Wilhelm checked his ego at the door like he should have WWI may have never happened at all. Still would have been a WWII given Japan of the 1930's and Stalin might have sensed an opportunity if Hitler never arose in Germany.

USA entered the war in April 1917, the war ended in November 1918, as the war began in 1914 alot of the major or famous battles were over by then, most war movies that make money are made by Hollywood, with so much investment they usually want an American focus in their world war movies.

‘All Quiet on the Western Front’, which may be the greatest war movie ever made, is a WW1 film. There are quite a few memorable ones, but admittedly, far more dealing with WW2, yes.

I guess that during the First World War, cinema was essentially in its infancy while by 1939, it was thriving. War movies became big business during the war years, often as propaganda. World War 2 became its own genre while it was still being fought, and the trend never really went away. Also until recently there were still filmmakers around who experienced it in real time.. I guess that made a difference, too.

Anyway, aside from All Quiet, I would strongly recommend to anyone who hasn’t seen them The Big Parade, Wings, The Grand Illusion, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Paths of Glory and King & Country. Among more recent films, Testament of Youth is excellent.
