Not getting the acclaim I expected.

It's a strong 77% on RT but I was expecting Bumblebee levels of acclaim.

That acclaim doesn't worth much in dollars, unlike Bumblebee Mary Poppins will earn most of its money domestically but MP's domestic take alone will outgross BB's worldwide total. BB seems like a decent movie but I don't think it will be enough to make it a smashing hit, moderate success if it's lucky.

reply

Nonsense! Few movies are over 1/2 domestic gross (BO Mojo).
Those that do: US appeal, horror, no China.

reply

I don't know how much of the awareness exists in other countries besides US and UK about MP and the original. Nostalgia will be a factor in those countries but not so much elsewhere.

You wouldn't know that from watching the "Behind the Scenes" special on ABC. There was sooooo much gushing! I'm amazed the tv sets weren't flooded by all the people praising how great it was going to be.

I worry that it'll bring forth a similar reaction to how I felt about the original Mary Poppins: Boring movie that was wayyyy too long with some messed-up aspects, whereas you hear all this praise coming out of the studio, and bragging about how it was Disney's pet project and put so much love and work into it. It kinda gives you mixed signals.

reply

Ummm...ABC is owned by Disney so what you watched was a COMMERCIAL, not gushing acclaim.
