Watching the ending got me thinking how realistic this could be for real astronauts and those that went missing.....
Are there any known astronauts that went to space and have yet to be found?
No astronaut has ever been 'lost' in space, they have died in some takeoff or reentry event... even the first living creature, the russian dog Laika, shot into space in November 1957 died a few hours after and the little ship with its doggie corpse was incinerated a few months later after it's orbit degraded

Believe me, if an astronaut was lost in space you'd hear all about it on the news. It hasn't happened--that we know of.
shareThere are persistent rumors that before Russia successfully launched Gagarin in space, there were several unsuccessful attempts that russians kept quiet about. It's possible that some of those early cosmonauts are indeed lost in space.
