We're reel-a-ters

Am enjoying the show, but I couldn't help but cringe everytime they said reel-a-ter.

Yes I know it's a little thing, but I gotta complain about something while the boards are still here.

reply

I saw a post on a different page about the word. How do you say it?

reply

Yes!!! As a REALTOR myself this aggravates me. It's real-tur!

reply

I say more it more like real-tor, but I'm glad I'm not the only one :)

reply

I say tor or tur, not sure which is correct but I know that extra syllable isn't right regardless of the u or o :-)

reply

It's registered - REALTOR®

reply

real-tor

People mispronounce it as ree-let-terr, or ree-la-terr

reply

We say reel a ter....even though we known it's wrong. Just feel weird saying Realtor...reminds me of Skeletor and it also makes me feel pretentious saying it correctly in a group that says it incorrectly...lol.

reply

Just a note... Whether the pronunciation is correct per Websters or not, I actually lived in Santa Clarita or near by for most of my life. Yes - it's a real place, and it sounds perfectly ok to me.

For those of you not familiar with the area, Santa Clarita is just a quick hop over the hill from "THE Valley" - so pretty much "like, totally, it's fer sure reel-a-ter".

reply

lol....I'll accept it as an in-joke, then. 

reply

lol I just said the exact same thing to my husband. It's like people saying "jew-lery," it's "jew-el-ry"

reply

or people in Ohio that say "worshcloth" instead of washcloth, just a regional thing.

reply

I don't think it's a regional thing. What region do you think it's specific to?

reply

Is that all of Ohio? I'm from Cincinnati, and that is definitely a thing down here.

reply

"Worshcloth" is a Pittsburgh thing.

reply

LOL .... lots of people from the pacific northwest for water, say wor-ter, or worsh for wash.

reply

It's like people saying "jew-lery," it's "jew-el-ry"

That's pretty different though...

There's only one spelling of "realtor" and the correct pronunciation reflects the spelling. The incorrect pronunciation adds an extra syllable where there isn't one.

Two pronunciations makes sense for jewelry/jewellery since there are two spellings-- one for American English and one for British English.

reply

Still the same thing. Even with 2 l's it's stil pronounced jew-EL-ry, not jew-lery

Ok you guys have got me curious now. A close family member of mine with a pretty thick Boston accent has a realtor license and I’m going to get back to you with how she says realtor.

I don’t have a noticeable Boston accent but once I got corrected by my Texan friend for pronouncing “drawer” like “draw” which I didn’t realize I was doing.

reply

Or alth-a-lete. "You think you're hot shit 'coz you know words!"

reply

In season two they address this mispronunciation.

reply

I just watched it and had to laugh.

reply

Guilty! I say reel-at-er

reply

There was a scene in Justified where Olyphant's character discusses the same issue with a realtor.

reply

Every time I rewatch that scene I crack up lol Two of my favourite shows.
