Moss is distractingly unattractive...

It seemed more fitting in Mad Men because it was acknowledged. She was just an average looking even dumpy woman in contrast to a lot of the trophy wives. Although one might argue her attention from men was a little absurd, none of her love interests were idols.

But it seems like her role here to be this highly desired woman and it just doesn't work. I think Yvonne should have been the handmaid.

The desire may have more to do with her strength and defiance. The commander enjoys playing Scrabble with her. She looks like an average woman which is more relatable and realistic.

I don't think she is "distractingly unattractive" at all. In an office setting for instance she would have looked very decent, better than many. And she looks like that without makeup.

I don't think Strahovski is attractive either nowadays, at least in this. But then I didn't think she was all that in Dexter either, where her character could at least use makeup. Basically, she was never attractive again (IMO) after Chuck.

Be real, Strahovski is stunning.

To you maybe, not to me.

She's actually fairly attractive, when her hair is done up and she's dressed well. Wearing a baggy red dress and a lamp shade, she looks rather broad-shouldered and plain. And that's sort of the point. Handmaids are not supposed to be sexy seductresses, they're supposed to be brood mares. Commander Waterford likes her because she's smart and difficult and forbidden (outside the ceremony). June is supposed to be a strong character, and she looks the part.

reply

I agree. I don't find her attractive either.

reply

It’s not her looks, because everyone on this show looks like hell, but the constant ultra, extended close-ups of her face are awful. Especially when she gives that evil, revenge look for the umpteenth time. It was maybe effective the first, second, or fifth time but she needs to get a new bag of acting tools to express her vengeance because this close-up schtick plays like a comic book thought bubble.

Could it be the rampant feminism?

Coleburg I was thinking the same about Ivonne. I often wonder how it would be if the roles were reversed. I don't feel that Moss is as unattractive though, as Much as it would simply be more believable to me if Ivonne was actually Offred/June.
