Ariel was white in the Hans Christian Anderson story and the animated film. The producers decided to change that.
Producers could choose to change TCP’s plot easily to focus on white women being subjected to sexism and abuse in the South. They were oppressed too. Better yet, make her Irish. The Irish were treated horribly in America. Make the title The Color Green.
