Why does MC keep assuming she wasn't picked based off of merits?

I find it incredibly racist that everyone just assumes Halle Bailey was a "diversity hire" when the simple, good faith, assumption would be that she just did a good job.

This isn't just me talking either. Pretty much all the ACTUAL critics and people that watched the movie thought she did a spectacular job, including the ones that didn't like them movie.

Does not take Sherlock Holmes....
Because, strangely, they keep doing this, and coincidentally, it goes only in one direction.
You never see a notoriously minority role be assigned to a deserving majority member - which inherently, should be more probable and happen more often.
Hence, it is deliberate.
Hence, it is yet another diversity hire.

Of course she was good. Should they ALSO hire an incompetent?
That would be too much.

reply

"Because, strangely, they keep doing this"
Doing what? Hiring people off their merits?

"and coincidentally, it goes only in one direction"
Because like 90% of majority roles were a single race before. That and for some odd reason white actors never seen to audition for black/Latino roles.

Is your only complaint that they aren't making "black roles" like Blade white? Because I seriously don't mind race swaps the other way around as long as they do it correctly.

"Of course she was good. Should they ALSO hire an incompetent?"
Then how is it a diversity hire? It sounds like she was just auditioned and won by the rules?

You're just pretending to be completely ignorant and uninformed about cinema in general? How is it that you claim to be unaware of other race swapping in films? Never heard of the following whitewashed roles?

Emma Stone as Allison Ng in Aloha
Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily in Pan
Scarlett Johansson as Motoko Kusanagi in Ghost in the Shell
Christian Bale as Moses in Exodus: Gods and Kings
Angelina Jolie as Mariane Pearl in A Mighty Heart
John Wayne as Genghis Khan in The Conqueror
Jake Gyllenhaal as Dastan in Prince of Persia
Ben Affleck as Tony Mendez in Argo
Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games
Gerard Butler in Gods of Egypt
Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's
Katherine Hepburn in Dragon Seed
Warner Oland in Charlie Chan
Yul Brynner in The King and I
Natalie Wood as Maria in West Side Story
Alec Guinness as Prince Faisal in Lawrence of Arabia
Laurence Olivier in Othello
Al Pacino as Tony Montana in Scarface

You forgot to mention Shakespeare using guys for all gal's roles, and Greeks using humans to play gods...

reply

I did not, I kept my list to more recent roles.

Are you going to stand by your claim that you "never see a notoriously minority role be assigned to a deserving majority member"

How do you define a "deserving majority member"?

reply

Fuck yeah I stand by it, you had to dig up bullshit like Rooney which is already widely condemned.

Deserving majority member would be Meryl Streep playing the indian mother in Killers of the flower moon because she is a much better actress than the one in the movie.

reply

The point I as trying to make is that people who actually watch films, "frequently see a notoriously minority role be assigned....". You act as though no one is aware of whitewashing in Hollywood. But you still stand by your stupid claim.

reply

What race was Katniss Everdeen supposed to be?

reply

The book describes Katniss as having olive skin, grey eyes and black hair. This would be typical of people from Southern Europe, Northern Africa and Eastern Asia etc. Ms. Lawrence has light skin and blonde hair.

While actors are generally praised for inhabiting other characters, some people are touchy about actors portraying characters of other ethnic groups.

Lawrence's casting in The Hunger Games is considered to be whitewashing.

reply

Collins didn't really put an emphasis on any one's race in those books, probably because it didn't matter. I don't really consider it white washing as other than saying olive skin, there really isn't anything else said about it. Olive skin has many different shades.

I think it's interesting that some people don't consider southern Europeans as white, while others do.

Not good, a decent job. She isn't much of an actress, just a good singer. And she, like Rachel Zegler, has no merits to speak of. A few credits and that's it, which speaks volumes. Actresses with "merits" wouldn't stake their names and alienate audiences. No one wants to be a new Brie Larson.

reply

She only got the role because of Jay Z and Beyoncé, you clearly haven’t done your homework if you’re just now hearing this from me.

And yes the movie would have still sucked had they cast a white red head, but let’s also not pretend that Halle Bailey gave some sort of good performance and wasn’t wooden when she had to give facial expressions alone, she was taking acting classes while filming this. Obviously she wasn’t right for the job.

reply

They cast a black actress to play a white character.

Doesn’t matter who they picked, they were still a diversity hire. Period.

It’s not like execs were planning to cast a white actress and suddenly changed their minds when a semi-talented, odd looking black actress walked through the door.

Zegler was a diversity hire for S’No White too BTW.

reply

BECAUSE YOU SAID SO...AND NO OTHER REASON.

reply

Jay Z and Beyoncé got her the job, look it up. It had nothing to do with merit, it was a black washing from the get go.

reply

Because there is a heavy push for this.
Its almost an unwritten law now in hollyweird.

They say Africa Americans make up 13% of the population. African American women less...around 7%.

Now take a look at the mayors, police chiefs, prosecutors, college professors and presidents and other high position jobs.

Its statically impossible for them to get into these positions unless they are a super special intelligent and skilled breed or there is a strange push by the left .

And there is a push by the left to put the most unqualified and ridiculous looking people in positions of power.

reply

THAT WAS FAIRLY FUCKED UP WHAT YOU SAID.
