The "white privilege" comment

Why is it necessary to have some kind of bullshit like that in every single movie now? You simply can't have a movie anymore without anyone making any kind of comment about race or gender. And for what? For who? Who even cares about that stuff other than a few assholes in twitter? The main reason why most people watch movies is to escape real life crap like that.

Meh, it all matched the character. It was a passing joke.

I have a rule for politics in movies. "If it matches the character, it's okay. If it has nothing to do with the character, it's just crappy preaching in a film."

The reaction to the joke about the homosexual and the cripple was to show how Guy was unaware of real world concerns. The white privilege comments was a passing jab at a character who was being nerdy from a guy who was being flippant.

It made sense to the characters which is fine and I'm a guy who hates the preachy Hollywood malarkey.

reply

Lol, no I knew that would upset right wingers even though it was literally just a mention. It's not like the character started lecturing.

reply

Seemed at least slightly tongue in cheek to me. Maybe because unlike you I don't have a 10-foot 2x4 shoved up my ass.

reply

Agreed. Totally inappropriate and took me out of the movie for a bit. Really ticked me off.

I feel the same way. Except swap "movie" for "moviechat thread".
I just wanna come onto moviechat to chat about movies but I log on and see another thread complaining about wokeness, white privilege, some guy named Kyle, and basically complaining about something out of nothing, basically. It's ridiculous.

reply

Gotta say I never actually noticed the line.

Which is probably a sign that I was enjoying the film.

reply

The white privilege comment was stupid. All it did is hurt the movie.
